It has been over five years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. What was meant to weaken Europe strengthened our unity. Ukraine stands firm. Europe stands with Ukraine. Russia’s aggression was a strategic miscalculation and our support to Ukraine remains steadfast. The path to peace is clear: intensifying pressure on Russia while increasing support for Ukraine.

8 May 1945 marked the end of the Second World War in Europe. However, for the Baltic states 🇱🇻🇱🇹🇪🇪 it did not bring freedom — occupation and violence continued.

Soviet propaganda described the occupation as “liberation”. Russia continues these lies, distorts historical facts and seeks to downplay the consequences of the occupation for the Baltic states.

We commemorate the victims of the war and remember history as it truly was.

Words matter. History matters — especially now.

On 8 August 1940, the occupying Soviet authorities decided to terminate the activities of Latvia’s 🇱🇻 diplomatic and consular missions abroad, a decision which the majority of envoys and consuls refused to comply with.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was effectively dismantled. At the same time, Latvia’s foreign service continued to operate uninterruptedly outside Latvia throughout the entire period of occupation, ensuring institutional and state continuity.

The declaration by the Acting U.S. Secretary of State Sumner Welles on 23 July 1940 in the Western countries consolidated a policy of non‑recognition of the incorporation of the Baltic states into the Soviet Union for nearly fifty years. It made it possible for Latvian legations to continue their work in the United States, Argentina, Brazil, the United Kingdom, as well as for the Permanent Delegation to the League of Nations and 72 consular missions.

History matters – especially now!

N**i Germany and the Soviet Union are equally responsible for the outbreak of the Second World War. On 23 August 1939, they signed a non-aggression treaty, the so-called Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, supplemented by secret protocols. This created preconditions for the occupation of sovereign European states.

The capitulation of N**i Germany on 8 May 1945 did not bring freedom to Latvia and the Baltic states. The Soviet Union re‑occupied the Baltic states, and continued forced Sovietisation and Russification of the occupied countries behind the “Iron Curtain”.

In 2026, the Russian economy is in real decline.

13,5 million people live below the poverty line in Russia.

What was sold as resilience is now stagnation.

War-driven growth is losing momentum, sanctions are tightening, prices are rising, financial reserves are shrinking, and uncertainty is increasingly shaping everyday life.

Weapons production doesn’t raise living standards. It consumes labour and capital and turns them into destruction.

Russia is trading its future just to keep the present running.
