Syrian Interim Government

Mr. Ghassan Hitto's resignation speech:

I wholeheartedly offer my congratulations to the Syrian people on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan. I ask God to grant us victory and to help us achieve the goals of the revolution.

On March 18, 2013, I was elected president of the Syrian Interim Government by the General Assembly of the Syrian Coalition in accordance with the Coalition’s statute. Since then, I have been working to lay the groundwork for a successful Interim Government as an operational tool of the Syrian Coalition.

I have held extensive political consultations in order to mobilize as much support for the government as possible. I have been in contact with different revolutionary forces inside Syria, and I have visited the liberated areas in order to assess the situation and evaluate the basic services the Syrian people need.

I stress once again that I have accepted the responsibility that the Syrian Coalition has entrusted me with. I restate that the government has been ready at all levels for more than two months, but circumstances known to everyone prevented me from starting to work on the ground.

For the sake of benefiting the Syrian revolution and in order to create an atmosphere of unity, particularly in the Syrian Coalition, I am sorry to announce that I can no longer carry out my duties as president-elect of the Syrian Interim Government. I must allow the new Coalition leadership to pursue its own political vision, especially for the Interim Government and its functions in serving the Syrian people. However, I reaffirm my commitment to working hard towards achieving the goals of the revolution by all possible means.

May God help us all to work for the benefit of our blessed Revolution.

We ask for Mercy for our martyrs, health for our wounded, and freedom for our detainees.

Long live Syria and its people, free and with honor.

Message from Prime Minister Ghassan Hitto

On June 9 2013, the Prime Minister of the Syrian Interim Government, Mr. Ghassan Hitto, has sent this letter to the Syrian Coalition. Accordingly, we are sharing it here in order to maintain our transparency with the Syrian people.

The message:

Ladies and Gentlemen, Vice-President, Secretary General, and members of the public,

Alsalamu Alaikom wa Rahmato Allahi wa Barakatu,

In my message on March 29, 2013, I explained in it the importance of institutional work and its essential role in leading our resilient nation out of its turmoil and ridding our nation from the evil forces whom continue killing, destroying, and displacing the Syrians.

The message emphasized the following:
• To consider the Syrian Coalition as the first and only reference to the Interim Government
• To elect the Prime Minister in a free and democratic manner
• To avoid any political enticement for the Syrian opposition, in efforts to focus on working on the ground and to essentially serve the revolution and the people

This is a very critical and precarious phase that has continued to incur all kinds of suffering, in addition to the evil use of force by Hezbollah, Iran and some Iraqi militias. They kill treacherously while boasting about their crimes, including what they did to Qusair. These actions reveal the severity of this phase and jeopardize the existence of the Syrian people and their land.

For this reason, it has become critical to maintain the Interim Government in order to look after the interests of the Syrian people. The harvest season of national wealth has started; wheat, cotton, olives and many other things are growing and in order to benefit from this wealth, which makes up most of the sustenance for the Syrian people, there must exist a governmental party. The government would address the current problems, while working with the lender and donor brothers that enable the people to continue living, while protecting the people of the revolution.

Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come to answer my calling and to make my government, which has been repeatedly announced as ready. This can happen within the institutional systems, which we work for, and the legal authorities and references in which we respect.

I repeat my plea to the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces to find the time during these critical circumstances to enable me within the institutional and legal realms to present my government. Thus, I can start its work in pursuit of the goals of this blessed revolution and to serve our great Syrian people.

Long live a free and proud Syria,
