Nestled along Trinidadโs rugged north coast, Matelot is a village rich in history, culture and natural beauty. Its name comes from the French word matelot, meaning โsailorโ, and appears in historical records as early as 1791.
Once a thriving cocoa-producing community, Matelot relied on coastal steamers to transport its agricultural produce before modern roads connected the area. Today, the Matelot River flows towards the sea at Matelot Bay, surrounded by lush greenery and the breathtaking scenery of Trinidadโs north coast.
Beyond its beauty lies a story of Indigenous heritage, colonial settlement, agriculture, fishing and community resilience.
Matelot is more than a picturesque destination; it is a living piece of Trinidad and Tobagoโs history, where the river, forest and sea come together in remarkable harmony. ๐น๐น
