The Pacific Strong: Amplifying Action to End Violence Against Women and Girls (PAVE) initiative in Tuvalu was launched on Monday.
High Commissioner David Charlton was very pleased to join the Tuvalu Women for Change Association (Fatulei) for the launch event.
PAVE is a five-year initiative that aims to improve access, quality, and reach of services that provide long-term support to survivors of violence in up to nine Pacific Island countries, including Tuvalu.
The initiative aligns with Australia’s International Gender Equality Strategy and Tuvalu’s Te Paagatasi Gender Equality Policy. We are working closely with Fatulei to deliver this support.
Through PAVE, Fatulei will continue and expand key activities, including:
- crisis counselling and case management
- outreach services to outer islands through the Family Champions network
- temporary safe accommodation
- establishment of a free phone helpline to improve access to support, including for outer island communities
- community education programs
We thank Fatulei for their continued leadership and support on this crucial issue. 🇹🇻🇦🇺

Mamaua from Tuvalu came to Australia on the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme (PALM) scheme with a dream to upgrade her own business at home.
“Back home, I do baking and catering, and that’s the reason I chose to come work on the PALM scheme, so I can buy better equipment for my bakery,” Mamaua said.
Through her hard work, Mamaua has already purchased an industrial mixer, which has helped her business greatly. Her next goal is to buy a larger oven.
Working at meat processing plant in Victoria’s southeast, Mamaua is a packer in the boning room, where she carefully packs cuts of meat into packaging, ready for supermarket shelves.
To her, joining the PALM scheme was a good opportunity to improve her business, learn new skills and to support her family.
“I just send my money back home, then my parents save the money. It helps everyone in the family,” said Mamaua.
She has advice for others thinking about joining the PALM scheme.
“Achieve what you came here to do, don’t waste this opportunity because there’s a lot of people back home waiting for this, so if they give you the opportunity, do it,” Mamaua said.
