KIGALI: THE Fair Competition Commission (FCC) of Tanzania has been crowned the overall winner in the Public Sector Service Quality category at the East African Community (EAC) Regional Quality Awards 2026. BuyMaps

The prestigious awards ceremony took place on the night of November 2, 2026, at the Movenpick Hotel in Kigali, Rwanda.

The award recognizes the FCC’s steadfast commitment and outstanding efforts in delivering high-quality public services, managing markets efficiently, protecting consumers, and promoting fair competition. This milestone positions the FCC as a leading public institution in fostering a culture of quality service within the East African region.

FCC secured the top spot in the category through its Market Management and Fair Competition enforcement services, beating stiff competition from notable public institutions across other EAC member states.

The short-listed contenders included Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) of Kenya, which showcased large-scale electricity generation services; the Rwanda Meteorology Agency, through its weather forecasting services; and the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) of Somalia, recognized for its national identification services.

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA is set to establish a Digital Technology Institute (DTI) in Dodoma at a cost of more than 441bn/- through a concessional loan from the South Korean government, in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s capacity to produce highly skilled professionals in advanced digital technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI). The project will be implemented following the signing of a 167.4m US dollar (about 441.12bn/-) concessional loan agreement between the Tanzanian government and the Export-Import Bank of Korea on November 3 this year. The financing will be provided through the Korea Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF).

Speaking during the loan agreement signing ceremony in Dar es Salaam, Treasury Permanent Secretary Dr Natu El-Maamry Mwamba said the institute would play a significant role in developing and nurturing highly skilled professionals in technical fields while strengthening the country’s ICT sector.

She said the institute would be equipped with modern training facilities, laboratories, digital infrastructure and research facilities, while strengthening collaboration between educational institutions and industries to bridge skills gaps and accelerate technological development.

ZANZIBAR: Yas Tanzania has pledged continued support for health camps organised by the Zanzibar Maisha Bora Foundation (ZMBF), helping more residents access specialist medical services.

The commitment was made during the opening of the Afya Bora, Maisha Bora medical camp in Kinduni, North B District, Unguja. The camp was organised by the foundation in collaboration with Zanzibar’s Ministry of Health, with support from Yas Tanzania. More than 30,400 people have benefited from the foundation’s health camps since the initiative began. BuyMaps

At the Kinduni camp, residents of North Unguja can access breast and cervical cancer screening, eye and dental care, and consultations with ear, nose and throat specialists. Blood donation services are also available.

Speaking at the opening, Zanzibar’s Minister of Health, Nassor Ahmed Mazrui, said taking specialist services closer to communities saves families the cost of travelling long distances to seek treatment.

NAIROBI: EAST African Community (EAC) partner states are meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, to discuss and develop joint strategies to address the potential impact of heavy El Niño rains expected across the region.

On the second day of the meeting, which began on November 4, 2026, senior disaster management officials from EAC partner states discussed a joint plan to respond to potential disasters arising from the rains, with the aim of strengthening preparedness and regional coordination.

During the discussions, the officials are assessing each country’s capacity to respond to disasters, identifying existing gaps and developing joint strategies to protect lives, essential services and economic activities, particularly trade across the East African region.

The meeting is expected to conclude on November 6, 2026, with an Extraordinary Joint Meeting of the EAC Sectoral Councils of Ministers responsible for Cooperation in Defence, Peace and Security, and Foreign Policy Coordination. The meeting will focus on strengthening regional preparedness to respond to the potential disasters.

NAIROBI: THE Minister of State, Prime Minister’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO–RALG), Professor Riziki Shemdoe, has reaffirmed Tanzania’s unwavering commitment to strengthening regional integration through effective and collaborative local governance, emphasizing that Local Governments must remain at the centre of East African integration and sustainable development.

Speaking on 4th November 2026 during the East Africa Local Government Forum (EALGF) in Nairobi, Kenya, Prof. Shemdoe highlighted Tanzania’s commitment to the Forum as a strategic platform for knowledge sharing, mutual learning, exchange of experiences, and collective action aimed at strengthening local governance across the East African Community (EAC). He assured member states that Tanzania remains a reliable partner in advancing the Forum’s objectives and regional cooperation agenda.

“Tanzania remains a dependable partner in advancing the Forum’s objectives and regional cooperation agenda. You can count on Tanzania,” Prof. Shemdoe emphasized.

He further reaffirmed Tanzania’s readiness to deepen collaboration with all EAC Ministries responsible for Local Government, underscoring the country’s commitment to sharing experiences, learning from regional best practices, and supporting joint initiatives aimed at strengthening local governance systems and improving service delivery across the Community

On institutional strengthening, Prof. Shemdoe expressed Tanzania’s strong support for fast-tracking outstanding strategic priorities, particularly the approval of the EACLGA Corporate Strategic Plan 2026–2031 and the development of a sustainable funding strategy. He noted that these instruments are essential in providing the Forum with clear strategic direction, institutional autonomy, and sustainable resources to effectively fulfil its mandate and deliver meaningful results for the people of East Africa.

DODOMA: PRIME Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba has said the Tanzanian government has begun the second phase of registering citizens under the Universal Health Insurance Scheme to reach persons with disabilities and other groups that have not yet benefited from the programme.

Dr Nchemba made the remarks in Dodoma on November 5, 2026, while responding to a question from Special Seats MP Stella Ikupa, who sought to know the measures being taken to ensure access to medical services for persons with disabilities who have not yet been covered by the scheme.

He said the first phase of registration targeted children, older persons and persons with disabilities.

Dr Nchemba said the government would work with leaders representing these groups to encourage citizens who have not yet registered to join the scheme, stressing that Universal Health Insurance is intended to cover all Tanzanians regardless of their economic status.

GEITA: CONSTRUCTION of a new Medical Stores Department (MSD) warehouse for the Kagera Zone in Chato District, Geita Region, has reached 97 per cent completion, a development expected to strengthen the institution’s capacity to efficiently store medical supplies for Kagera, Geita and neighbouring areas once it becomes operational.

The warehouse, covering 4,800 square metres and costing 19bn/-, is expected to become a major centre for storing and distributing medical supplies, while expanding MSD’s service coverage from the current 11 councils to 17.

Kagera Zone MSD Manager, Kalendero Masatu, said completion of the facility would enable the institution to increase its storage capacity, maintain medical supplies at the required quality standards and extend services to more customers.

DODOMA: PRIME Minister Mwigulu Nchemba has directed the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) to expedite procedures for selling agricultural produce whenever markets become available to avoid losing business opportunities due to lengthy processes.

He also urged relevant institutions to continue seeking reliable markets and facilitate the export of agricultural produce, noting that the government has increased the maize purchasing price through NFRA from 450/- to 500/- per kilogramme.

Dr Nchemba made the remarks in Parliament in Dodoma on November 5, 2026, during the Prime Minister’s question-and-answer session in the Eighth Sitting of the Fifth Meeting of the 13th Parliament.

He was responding to a question from Kongwa MP, Isaya Mngurumi Moses, who wanted to know the Government’s strategies for securing markets and improving crop prices to ensure farmers benefit from their production.

Dr Nchemba said whenever NFRA secures a market, it should complete the necessary sales procedures promptly, explaining that delays could cause potential buyers to source produce from other markets where transactions are processed more quickly.
