National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB) Optimize livestock production and productivity through animal breeding

The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Databank (NAGRC & DB), was established by an Act of Parliament, the Animal Breeding Act, 2001. It is a body corporate mandated to take a leading role in establishing a comprehensive National Animal Breeding Programme in Uganda. NAGRC was established to cater for conservation of the indigenous breeds that are adapted to the local environment at the same time address the need for higher yielding breeds with market driven goals. It is for these reasons that the breeding role like other vital roles which include among others disease control and regulatory roles cannot be left entirely to the private sector.

*50 Artificial Insemination Technicians Complete Training under GDI*

National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB) has successfully concluded a 20-day Artificial Insemination (AI) training for 50 technicians under the Green Dairy Investment Programme (GDI), implemented by Heifer International in partnership with aBi Development Ltd.
The training strengthens the availability of skilled AI service providers to support dairy farmers with improved breeding services, contributing to increased productivity and climate-resilient dairy production. Training of AI technicians and access to improved genetics are among the programme’s key interventions.

GDI targets 37,000 smallholder farmers and promotes climate-smart dairy practices, including improved breeding, feed systems, renewable energy, animal health and water management.

On 15 July 2026, Primary Seven learners from Taibah International School toured National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB)’s National Bull Stud, where they observed a semen collection demonstration and visited the liquid nitrogen production plant.

Today, NAGRC&DB staff are supporting the P.7 Goldcrest class to present their “Cattle Rearing” exhibition during Taibah Agrofest. The team is providing technical guidance to help the learners explain modern cattle breeding and management practices to parents, fellow learners and other visitors.

These engagements promote practical agricultural learning and inspire young people to appreciate cattle farming as a career and business opportunity.
