As Uganda prepares to join the rest of the World tomorrow to commemorate the International Candle Light Memorial, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives has today organized a Candle Light Breakfast, in honor of those that have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS and to stand with those living with the virus.

During the event, that was held at the Ministry headquarters at Farmers' House in Kampala, the Permanent Secretary Ms. Lynette Bagonza, who was represented by the Under Secretary Mr. Deogratius Masagazi emphasized the importance of continuous awareness of HIV/AIDS, commending the Ministryโ€™s HIV/AIDS Committee for their efforts in raising awareness across the entire ministry.

He stressed the need to protect women who are the most vulnerable group, as Uganda works towards ending AIDS by 2030.

Speaking to the staff of the Ministry, Dr. Stephen Watiti, a commissioner at Uganda AIDS Commission, shared his 30-year journey living with HIV, saying opening up helped him access support and ARVs, which have enabled him to live a long healthy life with the virus in his body.
He urged the Ministry staff to work towards a zero-HIV Uganda through prevention and consistent treatment.

Other speakers, including Dr. Mathias Mwesigye from the Ministry of Health and Ms. Maureen Kwikiriza from Uganda AIDS Commission emphasized the role of women in fighting HIV saying majority of HIV positive people in Uganda are women.

They encouraged the Ministry staff to embrace testing before engaging in sexual activities, saying that every week, 711 people get infected in Uganda.

According to the Uganda AIDS Commission, national HIV prevalence is 5.4%, with 1.3โ€“1.4 million people living with HIV and 37,000โ€“54,000 new infections annually. But AIDS-related deaths have dropped 64%โ€”bringing us closer to eliminating AIDS as a public health threat.
