WHAT BUSINESS SHOULD I DO? (PART 6)

Business is the expression of Your SHAPE!!

We found this Bible passage in 1 Samuel 17:31 – 37 (NKJV) very intriguing.

Now when the words which David spoke were heard, they reported them to Saul; and he sent for him. Then David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”
And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.”

But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”

And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”

E represents Experiences

When we talk about experiences here we don’t mean the experience of having done that thing before. We are talking about the day to day lessons one learns while doing things that give one courage or the confidence to do something and believe that they will succeed. Saul told David a fact. David had never fought any battle with any man. But David had fought wild animals and he had the courage/confidence that his success in fighting the animals helped him learn priceless lessons in warfare. Goliath was experienced in the conventional understanding of the word. David was unconventionally experienced. David prevailed because he had learnt certain lessons in a different field. If David had been in a job interview in today’s world, he would have failed miserably. He lacked “experience” in fighting men. But David had experiences of warfare that taught him valuable lessons for defeating the giant. This is what we call the “streetwise” experiences. These valuable lessons are necessary all round. And many times we don’t learn them in the actual field of life. That is why we think that business is an expression of your experiences which have taught you valuable lessons for success in it!!

WHAT BUSINESS SHOULD I DO? (PART 5)

Business is the expression of Your SHAPE!!

A man had two young sons. One of them, (Johnny), the eldest, was eight years old. The second (Jerry), was six years old. They had a wonderful cat they both loved and hated at times. One day the cat got into the way of the neighbour’s dog and the dog bit it but it somehow survived his grip and escaped into its own home. The bite was a bit severe and after two days the cat died. It was a sad moment for the boys and the father decided to let them participate in according the cat a “decent” send-off. He told them, “Boys, Lassie (the cat) is gone and I want you to go and bury her properly. I am hurrying to work now but I trust you will give Lassie a good place to rest.” Suddenly there was a flurry of questions from Johnny. How do we bury her? Where shall we bury her and what shall we use to dig the ground? What about covering her; what shall we use? How shall we make sure the dogs shall not uncover her?

His questions would have continued if his little brother Jerry had not interrupted saying, “I know what we shall do. We shall use the hoe and spade which are in the garage for digging the ground and clearing the soil. I think we should bury her in the far corner of the garden and we shall cover her with soil and put some stones on top of the soil so that the dogs won’t find her. Come on Johnny lets go.”

“That is brilliant,” interjected the Dad. “You guys have a good day. I’m off now.” “Bye Dad,” the boys chorused and they went dashing to the garage to find the tools.

Johnny became very active digging with hoe and clearing the soil with the spade. Jerry watched and helped as Johnny did a big portion of the work. It was difficult to imagine that this was the same Johnny who seemed clueless about what to do.

In our lesson today we clearly see the difference in personality between the two boys.

P represents Personality

Personality is a combination of attributes like behavior, temperaments and mental attitudes that form the character of an individual. Personality defines the way a person thinks and approaches tasks. In the case of the story above; Johnny is a type of person who likes his tasks defined clearly for him. He is a man who wants all the details laid out clearly before he gets to work. Jerry, on the other hand, is the type of person who just wants to know the task ahead and the details of getting it done are his to think about and generate an action plan. Jerry is an innovator and a creative problem solver while Johnny is typically the implementer type. In business Johnny will be comfortable doing a business where the customers come and ask for specific products or services. Jerry on the other hand might be more comfortable with a business that requires continuous innovation and creation of solutions for the customers. The two will be completely de-motivated if they were in reversed roles and success would be jeopardized. That is why we think that business is an expression of your personality!
