WHICH BOOKS HAVE YOU READ THIS YEAR SO FAR ?

Charlse Spurgeon produced more than 140 books of his own books like The Treasury of David, which was twenty years in the making, and Morning and Evening, and Commenting on Commentaries, and John Ploughman’s Talk, and Our Own Hymnbook.

He often worked eighteen hours in a day.

The mission-ary David Livingstone, once asked him, “How do you manage to do two men’s work in a single day?” Spurgeon replied, “You have forgotten there are two of us.”

I think he was referring to the presence of Christ’s energizing power that we read about in Colossians 1:29 when Paul says, “I toil, struggling with all his energy that he power-fully works within me.”

Spurgeon’s attitude toward sacrificial labor would not be acceptable today when the primacy of “wellness” seems to hold sway. He said,
_"If by excessive labour, we die before reaching the average age of man, worn out in the Master’s service, then glory be to God, we shall have so much less of earth and so much more of Heaven!” It is our duty and our privilege to exhaust our lives for Jesus. We are not to be living specimens of men in fine preservation, but living sacrifices, whose lot is to be consumed."_

PANGS OF THE APOSTLE

Father, we thank you for our generation.

God, our generation needs you. We do not want to ask that we pray like Paul did because travail without the revelation of it will mean that we are merely carnal men trying to reach out to a spiritual experience, but we will ask you why he would sleep hungry, be marooned and stoned for the gospel; why he would be willing to be cursed for his brethren the Jews' sake; why he would count all but loss for the gospel.

God cause us to feel what that man felt. Cause us to wake up every morning with a story to tell about your name. Lord, even after the conferences, the Sunday services and prayer meetings are done, cause us to preach it all over again, to believe it, to pray in it. Cause us to love when we cannot love. Cause us to forgive. Just cause us to do these things again and again and we will be good.

God, we want to change this generation. It might not make much sense why we do some things, but give us the strength to do them tomorrow, that even after tomorrow we shall still do them. There are many things that are going to befall us as believers of the gospel but even in the instances where we could have proved and commended ourselves through the depth of knowledge, we choose to walk the way of love and we will love until the end.

God, there are them that preach out of contention and strife, them who seek our downfall, those who are given to speak evil about us and we have experienced these things, but God, mysteries never saved us, competition never saved us, depth never saved us but LOVE saved us.

JUST HELP US TO STAND; HELP US TO FORGIVE; HELP US TO LOVE MEN. While we are yet in the body, GOD HELP US. In Jesus' name. Amen

A rich soul will work hard no matter how uncomfortable the circumstances. A poor spirit will seize on any reason to put in a poor or no performance.

The treasure within attracts that without. The same land on which men tread, some mine gold. The same fire that burns chaff, is the same that purifies gold. The intensity though determines the end. The former ash, the latter value.

_The Careful and Consecutive Reading of the Holy Scriptures by George Müller_

Concerning this subject Mr. Müller says: *"I fell into the snare, into which so many young believers fall, the reading of religious books in preference to the Scriptures.* I could no longer read French and German novels, as I had formerly done, to feed my carnal mind; but still I did not put into the room of those books the best of all books. I read tracts, missionary papers, sermons, and biographies of godly persons. The last kind of books I found more profitable than others, and had they been well selected, or had I not read too much of such writings, or had any of them tended particularly to endear the Scriptures to me, they might have done me much good. I never had been at any time in my life in the habit of reading the Holy Scriptures. When under fifteen years of age, I occasionally read a little of them at school; afterwards God's precious Book was entirely laid aside, so that I never read one single chapter of it, as far as I remember, till it pleased God to begin a work of grace in my heart.

Now the Scriptural way of reasoning would have been: God himself has condescended to become an author and I am ignorant about that precious Book, which His Holy Spirit has caused to be written through the instrumentality of His servants, and it contains that which I ought to know, and the knowledge of which will lead me to true happiness; therefore I ought to read again and again this most precious Book, this Book of books, most earnestly, most prayerfully, and with much meditation; and in this practice I ought to continue all the days of my life. For I was aware, though I read it but little, that I knew scarcely anything of it. But instead of acting thus, and being led by my ignorance of the word of God to study it more, my difficulty in understanding it, and the little enjoyment I had in it, made me careless of reading it *(for much prayerful reading of the Word, gives not merely more knowledge, but increases the delight we have in reading it);* and thus, like many believers, I practically preferred, for the first four years of my divine life, the works of uninspired men to the oracles of the living God.

EXCERPT

To be penitent, to feel sorry for sin, to shed tears, to even make decisions does not bring in salvation. Confession, decision, and many other religious acts can never be and are not to be construed as new birth. Rational judgment, intelligent understanding, mental acceptance, or the pursuit of the good, the beautiful, and the true are merely soulical activities if the spirit is not reached and stirred.
