Mid week, I joined fellow local leaders from across the country for a two-day meeting in Kampala organized by Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries to discuss strategies aimed at transforming Uganda’s agricultural sector.
During the meeting, we agreed on several key measures intended to improve agricultural productivity, strengthen food security, and promote commercial agriculture across the country.
Among the resolutions reached was the need to introduce mandatory vaccination of animals against Foot-and-Mouth Disease to protect livestock, control the spread of infections, and safeguard farmers’ livelihoods.
We also emphasized the importance of increasing investment in irrigation systems and water infrastructure across districts to support year-round farming and reduce dependence on seasonal rainfall.
Furthermore, we highlighted the need to address persistent structural gaps in agricultural extension services to ensure that farmers receive adequate technical guidance, modern farming knowledge, and other essential support to improve productivity.
The meeting also considered the importance of supporting new fisheries management regulations to promote sustainable fishing practices and strengthen the management of Uganda’s fisheries resources.
In addition, we agreed on the need to intensify public mobilization and sensitization to encourage communities to embrace commercial agriculture as a pathway to improved household incomes, job creation, and economic development.
The two-day engagement underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector through coordinated leadership, improved infrastructure, effective agricultural services, and increased participation in commercial farming.
