🚔 Committed to Excellence Through Training

Detectives Jarrod Zaruba, Zack Krage, and Justine Charles recently completed an intensive two-week, 80-hour Homicide Investigation Course presented by the Southern Police Institute (SPI).

This specialized course covered critical aspects of death investigations, including crime scene analysis, forensic evidence collection, investigative techniques, case management, and courtroom preparation. Through real-world case studies, hands-on exercises, and instruction from experienced professionals, our detectives gained valuable knowledge and skills to further strengthen their investigative abilities.

Continuing education and specialized training are essential to providing thorough, professional investigations. We are proud of our detectives for their dedication to professional development and their commitment to better serving our community.

👏 Congratulations to our detectives on completing this challenging course!

The Aberdeen Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Katherine Frank, as well as the entire Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office.

We are grateful for Deputy Frank's service and dedication to her community. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragic loss.

Rest in peace, Deputy Frank.

Passing of Deputy Katherine Frank -

The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office announces with profound sadness the passing of Deputy Katherine Frank, age 26, earlier today. Deputy Frank was surrounded by her family and loved ones in her final moments. In her final act of service and generosity, she became an organ donor, continuing to help others even in her passing. Katherine worked at the South Dakota State Penitentiary from September 2022 until being hired with the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office in June 2024.

Deputy Frank’s death is a significant loss to our agency and to the broader law enforcement community in and around Sioux Falls. She served the citizens of Minnehaha County with professionalism, humility, and dedication. Her absence will be felt deeply by all who have had the privilege of working alongside her.

A memorial has been established at the Law Enforcement Center located at 320 W. 4th St., Sioux Falls, SD, for those who wish to pay their respects. The Sheriff’s Office will also continue maintaining a presence at the hospital as we support her family during this difficult time.
Further information regarding funeral services, honors, and departmental arrangements will be provided as soon as it becomes available.

Deputy Frank served with dignity and heart. Her service made a meaningful difference, and her impact will remain with us always.

☕ Coffee with a Cop at the Aberdeen Area Senior Center 👮‍♂️

We had a great time this morning joining local veterans, their families, and community members for Veterans Coffee at the Aberdeen Area Senior Center.
Veterans Coffee gives people a chance to get together, enjoy a cup of coffee, share resources, and, most importantly, connect with one another.

Today, we were grateful for the opportunity to join them for Coffee with a Cop. Events like this give our department a chance to sit down, have conversations, answer questions, and connect with community members outside the usual day-to-day calls for service.

A big thank you to the Aberdeen Area Senior Center and everyone who stopped by and shared a cup of coffee and conversation with us! ☕👮‍♂️

The Aberdeen Police Department will be conducting night fi****ms training at our training range south of town on multiple evenings this week.

Residents in the area may hear gunfire during the evening hours. This is scheduled law enforcement training, and we expect training to be completed by approximately 10:30 p.m. each night.

Night fi****ms training provides our officers an opportunity to practice and maintain skills under low-light conditions they may encounter while performing their duties.

We are providing this notice so residents in the surrounding area are aware of the training and the potential for increased noise.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

On October 1, 2026, at approximately 4:17 p.m., an officer with the Aberdeen Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle near the intersection of U.S. Highway 281 and 6th Avenue SW. The vehicle fled northbound from the intersection at a high rate of speed. Due to the potential danger a pursuit could pose to the public, the officer did not pursue the vehicle.

The vehicle eventually collided with a pole on the Brown County Fairgrounds near NW 24th Avenue. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was transported by ambulance for evaluation of possible injuries.

The Aberdeen Police Department and Brown County Sheriff’s Office worked together during the incident and investigation. It was determined that the vehicle had been stolen from a residence in Brown County outside of Aberdeen.
The driver was identified as 37-year-old Logan John Azure of Aberdeen, SD. Following his release from medical care, Azure was charged with the following offenses:

• Driving Under the Influence – SDCL 32-23-1
• Reckless Driving – SDCL 32-24-1
• Second-Degree Eluding – SDCL 32-33-18.2
