Our government can create entire alphabet agencies and other departments with the stroke of a pen. What will it take for us, the people, to apply real agency into creating our own institutions?
It is fair to say that the general consensus is that we are currently living in a police state. In addition, faith and trust in our entire justice system could be said to be at an all time low.
Ideas have been pitched ad infinitum on how to reform policing, the world over. How do you feel this can this be done? I've advocated a creation of something like N.A.P.O. and many others have proposed similar ideas and goals. The legal framework, structure, planning etc. for such an endeavor may be monumental... but I think we can all agree 'something' needs to happen.
To be blunt, we do not ask disease to hold itself accountable for the harm it causes, we diagnose, treat, and attempt to remove it by any means necessary or possible. Afterall, healthy cells, tissues, etc find it hard to function correctly with bad neighbors. What I'm saying is self accountability is often rather difficult to secure without external influence.
We need to be that external influence. Separate, yet part of a whole. I sincerely believe that if we create an institution that is made up of something like an 'elected jury' we can hire, fire, retain, promote, demote, screen (etc) positions of law enforcement at every level.
The easiest way I can think of pitching this: if law enforcers are employed in much the same way athletes are to make a team, I wager we would see a massive reduction in criminal misconduct almost immediately. I mean, an NFL team would never tolerate a wide receiver who fumbles all the time, so why do law enforcers with their own 'rap sheet' still have a job? Internal investigations, poor training, 'fast track' recruitment to name a few.
We can do better. We deserve better.
It is not impossible to restore trust in law enforcement. It is also not possible to sustain current practices without further, unacceptable, tragedy.

By no means an easy job, especially when belligerence is so often an active variable. Note how well the officer handles this upset individual.

The corruption of noble cause in full swing. Enforcement is ever perched precariously between the edge of interpreted need and lack of empathy.

If this is not corruption of noble cause, then how would it be considered a service to affected communities?

An idea is often thought to have merit when interest is demonstrable. If action is the caveat that propels an idea to maturity, then this idea needs interested parties that would help see it to fruition.
Currently, the only interest appears to be with those who consistently keep tabs at roughly the same time.
If your interest lies in productive ends to facilitate the aims of this page, feel free to make suggestions.

It is evident, now more than ever before, that people demand reform. It is no coincidence that the publics trust in current policing practices has been met with unprecedented decline.
The influence of these assertions have been profound and as such can no longer be ignored. Inquiry and the subsequent mass criticism have slammed open the doors to a much needed evaluation of where we wish to proceed from here.
With a sharp decline in both recruitment and retention nationwide, many departments are increasing salaries and other incentives.
Yet ask yourself: "Who is still being targeted for employment and what constitutes the ideal candidate?"
You may find that the 'ideal' sought by departments is no different from those in law enforcement who have created these problems in the first place.

Interesting article that further confirms the need for 'law enforcement reform'.
In Iraq, I raided insurgents. In Virginia, the police raided me.
I got home from the bar and fell into bed soon after Saturday night bled into Sunday morning. I didn’t wake up until three police officers barged into...

Viewer discretion is strongly advised. According to the article, officer Cruz is still an officer, and the DA wrote it off as "justified".
The importance and need of a citizen run oversight committee with authority to remove hostile men and women in uniform from our local departments is becoming ever more evident.

This is the kind of "professional" conduct we must be vigilant against. This is what discredits our public servants and encourages the distrust of law enforcement we rail against.

Whether you agree or disagree with the need for Peace Officers, the fact is; we all pay for them and their services. When you purchase something, in any case, do you not expect quality?
