🚨 The Great Abilene Walkabout | 01-29-1958

8-year-old Mike Johnson wasn’t one to let school cramp his sense of adventure. Living on Cherry Street with his mom, Mike decided to ditch Locust Elementary one morning and hit the road with his trusty dog. 🐾

By midmorning, Abilene police were fielding calls from all over town: spotted at the bus station, then near the hospital, wandering around South 1st & Sayles, and even walking along College Street.

But young Mr. Johnson was already known to local law enforcement. A few years earlier, he pedaled his trike to a feed mill and climbed on top. And another time he made it halfway to the airport before a cop picked him up.

That same officer once warned, “If I catch you out again, I’ll give you a spanking.” Mike replied, “You don’t have to. My mom will do that when I get home.” 😅

His dog tapped out first, showing up back home around 8:00 PM. Mike? He strolled in around 9:30 PM, ready to face the music.

Some kids play hooky. Mike took the whole town for a stroll.
