Crews are scheduled to perform road maintenance on Russell Road, between Campus Drive and Poplar Street, the week of June 22, 2026.
The work will consist of single lane closures, with flaggers, and could potentially last multiple days. Please use alternate routes where available; anyone needing to travel on Russell Road should expect delays.
Please use caution when traveling in the area and follow any posted signage and/or flaggers present.

The Abingdon Police Department's administrative offices will be closed Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth. Offices will reopen on Monday, June 22, 2026, at 8:30 AM.

Brandishing Firearm Call Leads to Pursuit and Arrest
ABINGDON, VA - On Thursday, June 11, 2026, at approximately 7:15 PM, officers with the Abingdon Police Department (APD) responded to the 600 block of Cummings Street for a male brandishing a firearm. It was reported the male was waiving a gun and cussing behind a business.
The male was located inside a parked Chevrolet Equinox when an APD officer arrived on scene. A loud noise was heard from inside the suspect vehicle that sounded like a gunshot. The suspect fled the parking lot in his vehicle and traveled north on Cummings Street with APD officers pursuing the suspect.
In an attempt to stop the vehicle, an APD officer conducted a precision immobilization technique (PIT) at the intersection of Cummings Street and West Main Street. The suspect vehicle continued moving and began traveling south on Cummings Street.
A motor vehicle crash occurred when the suspect vehicle collided with two vehicles not involved in the pursuit at the intersection of Cummings Street and Cook Street. The suspect was negotiated successfully out of the vehicle and taken into custody. No injuries were reported from the collision.
During a preliminary investigation, two fi****ms were recovered from the suspect vehicle.
As a result of the investigation, Christian Clutter, age 29, of Abingdon, VA, was arrested and charged with:
β’ One count of Felony Eluding
β’ One count of Misdemeanor Brandishing a Firearm
β’ One count of Misdemeanor Driving While Intoxicated, First Offense, BAC >.20%
β’ One count of Misdemeanor Reckless Driving
β’ One count of Misdemeanor Driving Without a Valid License
β’ One count of Misdemeanor Fail to Stop at a Stop Sign
The investigation remains ongoing with additional charges pending.
