Step into a world of imagination. Now on display at William King Museum of Art

The Korshak Collection: Illustrations of Imaginative Literature features a variety of artworks from some of the artists who laid the foundations for our collective visual imagination: Brian Froud, Arthur Rackham, Gustave Dore and Aubrey Beardsley among many others.

Visitors will be able to see vivid scenes from classics like Alice in Wonderland, dramatic moments painted for pulp fiction covers and well-known characters like Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars, and J.R.R. Tolkien’s Gandalf. Among them will be fairies, witches, living skeletons, and plenty of aliens!

🎨 Plein Air Abingdon begins today!

For the next four days, artists from across the country will set up their easels throughout and Southwest Virginia.

Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, Plein Air Abingdon is a great time to enjoy the beauty of fall in the mountains and experience art being created in real time.

Want to Watch the Artists Paint? Artists will be painting across the region (open location choice) on both Wednesday and Thursday. They’ll paint in Damascus, VA on Friday. And they’ll paint in the downtown historic district of Abingdon, VA for a 4-hour Quick Draw competition on Saturday from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.

Art lovers can also get first pick on stunning paintings hot off the easel! Public Sale Galleries will be held on Thursday, October 8th, 5:30-7:30 pm at the Barns at Chip Ridge and Saturday, October 10th, 6:00-7:30 pm at the SWVA Cultural Center & Marketplace.

First Friday continues this fall in ! 🍂

As the seasons and weather change, First Friday welcomes a slower pace for fall and winter. Each month starting in October, one partner will host the evening, giving you a central location to begin your night before wandering through downtown at your own pace.

For the October 2nd event, The Arts Depot is your host venue. Start your evening there for the opening reception of the Highlands Camera Club exhibit, Moments, then keep the evening going with participating galleries, shops, restaurants, and more throughout downtown.

Here’s what else we know is happening in October:
📸 Dot+Hop Art Studio — Meet the artist, live painting & hors d’oeuvres
👻 Art Lab — Monster shadow puppet craft with Michael Ge**er, three Hallway Gallery exhibits, snacks & open artist studios
🖌️ Holston Mountain Artisans — Live artisan demonstrations

LibertyFest is here! 🇺🇸

We’re kicking things off today at 4 p.m. at the Abingdon Muster Grounds with the official opening ceremony and ribbon cutting of the newly restored historic home known as “Retirement.” Then, head downtown for Thursday Night Jams at the Market Pavilion tonight at 7:30 PM, where GRAMMY-nominated cellist and arranger Dave Eggar (Dave Eggar) brings members from the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and other special guests together on the stage for a one-of-a-kind LibertyFest performance he calls “Bridgerton to Baroque.” 🎻

🎭 Tomorrow & Saturday: Experience Kings Mountain at Barter Theatre’s Smith Theatre, a special VA250-commissioned production bringing the world of the Overmountain Men, British soldiers and enslaved Americans into focus. Showtimes are Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

🏛️ Three Revolutionary exhibits to explore:
—The Keller Interpretive Center at the Abingdon Muster Grounds
—The VA250 Mobile Museum, parked beside the Abingdon Visitor Center on Main Street
—Barter Theatre’s special Kings Mountain companion exhibit in the Barter Lounge at Smith Theatre

And throughout the weekend, there’s even more to experience, from lectures and living history to a vintage 1860 base-ball game, a headstone preservation workshop with Laura Stotts, the March to the Muster, Stew & Brew Square Dance, Living History Day (at Fairview Farm & Homestead AND at the Abingdon Muster Grounds), family activities, and our Colonial Picnic & Apple Fest to close out the weekend.
