Abingdon Fire Department has partnered with the Cameron Craig Foundation to host the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation program "Taking Care of Our Own".

Fire departments don’t know when they will have a line-of-duty death or serious injury. Do you have a plan in place? Do you know how to notify survivors in a timely and proper way? Are your personnel records current? Do you know how to access Federal, State, and local benefits?

Targeted for all fire service personnel, this course covers pre-incident planning, survivor notification, family and coworker support, and benefits and resources available for survivors.

Last night, at approximately 7:00 PM, crews were dispatched to Interstate 81 for a motor vehicle crash involving a vehicle that had left the roadway, traveled approximately 25 feet down an embankment, and struck a tree.

Upon arrival, crews worked to stabilize the vehicle and begin a technical extrication of the patient. After an extensive operation, firefighters were able to successfully extricate the patient and transfer care to Washington County Life Saving Crew.

The patient was then transported from the scene by Virginia State Police Med-Flight 2 for further medical treatment.

Incidents like this require strong teamwork and coordination between multiple agencies, and we appreciate the hard work of everyone involved.

Agencies involved:
πŸš’ Abingdon Fire Department
πŸš‘ Washington County Life Saving Crew, INC.
🚁 Virginia State Police Medflight 2
πŸš“ Virginia State Police

Please continue to use caution while traveling on Interstate 81 and give emergency crews plenty of room when approaching an active scene.

Last night around 9:30 PM, Abingdon Fire units were dispatched to the Virginia Creeper Trail for a reported bicycle accident.
Upon arrival, crews located the patient down over an embankment, making access difficult. Rope rescue equipment was utilized to safely haul the patient up the embankment and back to an accessible location.
Once the patient was brought to the top, they were turned over to EMS and ultimately airlifted to a regional trauma center for further treatment.
Great work by all of the crews involved in what was a challenging rescue. πŸš’πŸͺ’πŸš‘πŸš
Please remember to use caution while enjoying the Virginia Creeper Trail, and always keep safety in mind.
