What better way to highlight the changing seasons than with a fun fall water safety riddle?

As the season begins to change remember life jackets are always in fashion and should be worn anytime you’re near the water. So, size your life jacket right, buckle or zip it up, and have fun recreating.

We know it has been a long, dry summer, and that river flows coming from Abiquiu have been less than a lot of people have been hoping for, but with all the recent rain flows are expected to increase as we let all that rain pass Abiquiu!
Begining at approximately 3PM, releases from Abiquiu Dam will increase to around 500 CFS and are expected to stay there for a few days, rain and inflow dependant.
If you are planning to come ride the Wave while flows last, please remember to wear your life jacket and we strongly suggest a wetsuit or drysuit as recent water temperatures in the river have been below 65F.

It’s National Public Lands Day! Come on by and help out at Abiquiu Lake and get a free night of camping. We’ll be here from 9:30 am until noon today, Saturday September 26, 2026. You can find us at Group Shelter 3 by the boat ramp.

*Thank you to those who showed up! We got a good bit of trash picked up and removed some invasive Salt Cedar!

⚠️🌊 Low-Head Dams & Weirs: Small Drop, Big Danger

They may look harmless, but weirs and low-head dams can create extremely dangerous conditions. Water flowing over the structure can form a powerful current and a circulating “hydraulic” current below it that can trap a person, swimmer, or even a boat.

Even strong swimmers can have difficulty escaping these currents.

🚫 Stay away from the area immediately above and below weirs and low-head dams.
🚫 Never swim, wade, fish, or operate a boat near these structures unless specifically permitted and designated as safe.
🚫 Keep children and pets away from fast-moving water and dam structures.
🚫 Wear a properly fitted life jacket when boating or recreating near the water.
🚫 Obey all warning signs, buoys, barricades, and posted closures.

Remember: Calm-looking water does not always mean safe water. When water is moving over or around a dam or weir, conditions can change quickly and the danger may not be visible from the surface.

Stay back. Stay alert. Respect the water.

The peak summer heat might be fading, but the sun and wind are still strong out on the water. Sun, wind, noise, and vibration can cause "boater's fatigue," which can impair your reaction time just as much as alcohol.
