Its complex forms are entirely sheathed in black EPDM rubber creating a monochromatic, monolithic and mysterious presence. Designed by Tom Pritchard as his first stand-alon

After visiting the Rubber House today, I wondered where Bob Lavaggi was, the intrepid builder who helped me realize the construction of the house 40 years ago. A little googling and voila, found him and visited him in Woodstock! Lots of memories and interesting things I’d forgotten. And he has some of the construction photographs I gave him in a scrapbook back then.

NYTimes tomorrow features THE RUBBER HOUSE. My first house, designed to be a group of monolithic sculptural forms. Excised of all ornament and typical vernacular house elements the rubber blurs wall and roof together allowing form remain. Before computer aided design, it was imagined and created by hand, many decisions finalized onsite working with a dedicated team of artist/builders. The rounded form of the studio prefigured Richard Gehry and Richard Serra’s Torqued Ellipses by decades. Designed for choreographer Eugene Loring and later owned by Willem Dafoe. We are working with the new owner on updates and restoration. But for now, you can stay there via AirBNB. NYT link in bio

Building The Rubber House, what it looked like before the rubber sheathing was applied. Photos from almost the same vantage point. Billy standing on the bridge above the kitchen and the stair tower not yet built to it’s full height.

Spring time in the Catskils is always green and lush. Tom Pritchard is hoping to stop by in a few days and visit The Rubber House.

We were in Kingston today and visiting with Barry at the Enterprise Car rental. Turns out he grew up 1 mile down the road from the Rubber House and his whole family lives there on their farm. Needless to say he knew the ledgendary Rubber House.
