🔥 Lithium-Ion Batteries: A Small Item That Can Create a Big Problem 🔥
This week, the Adams County Fire District responded to a report of the smell of smoke inside the Adams County Solid Waste and Recycling Facility in Friendship.
Upon arrival, the Incident Commander made contact with facility employees who had just removed a bale of mixed refuse believed to be the source of the odor. Using a thermal imaging camera, firefighters identified a significant heat source within the bale.
The bale was carefully opened to investigate the source of the heat. Firefighters discovered a melted mass of debris, and the source was confirmed to be lithium-ion batteries that had been improperly disposed of with regular refuse.
⚠️ This incident is an important reminder: Lithium-ion batteries should never be placed in your regular garbage or recycling. When damaged, crushed, or exposed to heat, these batteries can ignite and create a rapidly developing fire.
♻️ The Adams County Solid Waste and Recycling Facility accepts lithium-ion batteries for safe disposal. Please take the extra time to dispose of these batteries properly.
We also want to recognize the Adams County Solid Waste and Recycling employees for their keen awareness and quick actions. Their decision to investigate the unusual odor and remove the suspected bale helped prevent what could have become a much larger incident.
If you smell smoke or notice something unusual—don't ignore it. Speaking up and taking action early can make all the difference.
