TAKE A WALK THROUGH YOUR BAYS.
Really look at the gear sitting on the racks.
You’ll notice something pretty damn quick.
About 80% of it looks brand new. Clean. Shiny. Barely touched. Sitting there collecting a little dust.
Then there’s the other 20%.
The gear that looks like it’s been through hell and back.
Charred. Torn. Stained. Beat to s**t.
THOSE ARE YOUR WORKERS.
The ones putting in the reps.
The ones heading toward the fire instead of away from it.
The ones crawling through the smoke, making the search, stretching the line, opening up the building and getting the job done without needing someone standing behind them telling them every move to make.
I want the firefighters you have to HOLD BACK AT THE DOOR.
Not the ones you have to convince to walk through it.
Give me the firefighter who sees the assignment and goes to work.
Not the one showing up for the T-shirt, the title, the recognition, or to be liked by everybody.
The real workers might p**s some people off.
They might be loud.
They might be stubborn.
They might not give a s**t about popularity contests.
But when you're making an interior search, riding the nozzle, opening up, or going to work in a bad building, those are the people you want beside you.
Because they know the job.
They've put in the reps.
They've earned their confidence.
And you don't have to stand there holding their hand.
That's what should scare every fire department.
Not dirty gear.
Not somebody who's been working hard enough to wear their equipment out.
What should scare you is how much perfectly clean gear is sitting on the racks because the person wearing it hasn't done enough work to get it dirty.
Everyone has a job.
But the truth is…
WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH WORKERS.
And on the fireground, you can tell the difference.
Your gear usually tells the story before you ever open your mouth.
