Burn restriction update for Elbert County

Effective immediately, the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office has moved to Stage I burn restrictions. Open burning requires a permit and must follow local fire department regulations.

Some activities, including certain grills and contained recreational fires, are allowed under the conditions listed in the attached order. Please read the full order before burning, and never leave a fire unattended.

Today, Agate Fire Protection District joins our nation in remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We honor the 2,977 people who never made it home that day, including the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS providers, and other first responders who ran toward danger while others were trying to escape.

We also remember the countless responders who worked at Ground Zero in the days, weeks, and months that followed, many of whom later became ill or lost their lives because of their service.

Twenty-five years later, we remember their courage, their sacrifice, and the way our country came together in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

May we never forget those we lost, those who answered the call, and the families whose lives were forever changed.

Today, Colorado officially recognizes what rural communities have always known: Emergency Medical Services are essential.

Across Agate’s 477 square miles, our responders travel interstates, highways, county roads, and open country to reach people during some of the most critical moments of their lives. In rural Colorado, EMS is not simply another service—it is a lifeline connecting our neighbors to lifesaving care.

This designation does not create the dedication behind EMS, but it gives that work the recognition it has long deserved.

What a sight to see! 🚂🇺🇸

Today, Union Pacific's legendary Big Boy No. 4014 rolled through Agate, giving our community a chance to witness one of the largest operating steam locomotives in the world.

Agate Fire Protection District was proud to be on scene to help ensure everyone stayed safe while enjoying this incredible piece of American railroad history.

Thanks to everyone who came out, followed the safety guidelines, and helped make it a great day.

🚨 TRAFFIC ALERT – I-70 CLOSED🚨

Interstate 70 is closed in both directions at Mile Marker 340 due to a semi-truck fire.

Please avoid the area and use alternate routes if possible. Expect significant delays, and do not attempt to bypass road closures. Emergency crews are on scene working to safely extinguish the fire and clear the roadway.

We will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Please slow down, move over for emergency responders, and drive safely. 🚒🚑🚓

🚨 Community Information🚨

If you've noticed hazy or smoky conditions in the Agate area today, the smoke is not from a fire within the Agate Fire Protection District.

The haze is drifting into our area from the Aspen Acres Fire burning outside of our district.

At this time, there are NO active wildland fires within the Agate Fire Protection District.

As always, if you see smoke or fire that concerns you, please don't hesitate to call 911 so it can be investigated.

Stay safe, and we'll continue to keep our community informed if conditions change.

Sunday, Agate Fire Protection District was proud to host a Grain Bin Rescue Training at Station 291. Huge thank you to Farm Credit for sponsoring this event and training. We were joined by our neighbors from North Central Fire Protection District for a day of hands-on training focused on one of the most challenging and dangerous rescue scenarios first responders may encounter in our rural communities.

Participants trained on specialized techniques for safely rescuing victims trapped in grain bins while emphasizing scene safety, teamwork, and effective rescue operations. These skills are rarely used but are critical when every second counts.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and dedicated their Sunday to sharpening their skills and strengthening the partnerships that help keep our communities safe. Training together ensures we're prepared to respond when our residents need us most.

🚒 Thank you to all of our members and to North Central Fire for making this training a success. We look forward to continuing to train together and build strong regional partnerships.
