Welcome to the official Savannah River Operations Office (DOE-SR) page. Department of Energy (DOE) organization that serves as the landlord for site resources and is responsible for overseeing the work performed by the Savannah River Site’s (SRS) contractors. SRS is a key DOE industrial complex dedicated to; environmental cleanup, nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship, and nuclear materials disposition, in support of the nation's nuclear non-proliferation efforts. The site also develops and deploys technologies to support radiological and chemical cleanup activities following approximately 50 years of producing materials used for nuclear weapons, primarily plutonium and tritium. The site’s center is approximately 15 miles south of Aiken, South Carolina and 25 miles southeast of Augusta, Georgia...the two closest population centers. The site covers more than 310 square miles. SRS is responsible for oversight of the DOE's Environmental Management operations under the Office of Environmental Management (EM). The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) also manages the Savannah River Field Office and the Office of Nonproliferation that perform National Security missions at SRS as tenant organizations.

On May 21, 1971, workers at the Savannah River Site transferred californium into shipping containers, a task requiring precision, expertise and attention to detail. What may have seemed like an ordinary day on the job now provides a glimpse into the site's rich history and the important work performed by generations of employees.

More than 50 years later, this photograph stands as a reminder that today's routine moments often become tomorrow's history.

In this photograph, you can almost sense the rhythm of the workmen moving carefully along the production line, inspecting and handling metal target tubes one at a time. Every step demanded precision; each component mattered, and a single error could disrupt the process.

The long rows of racks and equipment reflect a workflow built on patience, discipline, and exacting standards. At the time, this was simply another shift inside Building 313-M at the Savannah River Plant. Today, it stands as a powerful snapshot of the skilled, often unseen workforce that helped sustain one of America’s most significant Cold War-era operations.
