Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging Our mission is to help older individuals' access information, assistance and resources that will empower them to self advocate and live independently.

Our History

Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging (M4A) was designated as an Area Agency on Aging in 1989. As our name indicates, M4A serves all consumers between Blount, Chilton, Shelby, St. Clair, and Walker counties to serve older individuals. Since 1989, M4A and its mission have grown to serve caregivers and people with disabilities regardless of age.

MYTH vs. FACT

Throughout Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Shelby County Domestic Violence Coalition is highlighting the many roles our community partners play in supporting survivors. At M4A, part of our role is assisting individuals in accessing the information, assistance, and resources that will empower them to self-advocate, live independently, and enjoy the highest quality of life.

MYTH: “Bruises and injuries are just part of getting older.”

FACT: Unexplained, repeated, or suspicious injuries should not automatically be attributed to aging. They may be a sign of domestic violence or other abuse and deserve attention.

Abuse can affect older adults, too. Signs may be overlooked or mistaken for normal changes associated with aging. Older adults may also face unique barriers to seeking help, including isolation, financial dependence, or relying on the person causing harm for daily care.

Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported at every age.

Our role is not to dismiss concerns or make assumptions. Our role is to listen without judgment, take concerns seriously, and help connect individuals with appropriate support and resources.
