The best seat in the bay comes with a hardworking crew.

Coast Guard Cutter George Cobb welcomed family members, guests and media aboard today for the San Francisco Fleet Week airshow and a glimpse of life aboard a buoy tender.

Southwest District Commander Rear Adm. Jeffrey W. Novak, Command Master Chief Travis Cutler and front office staff visited to personally thank the crew, who worked into Friday evening to ensure the cutter was ready to get underway. Their dedication made today’s experience possible.

To the George Cobb crew: thank you for your hard work and hospitality. And to our families, guests and community partners, thank you for spending the day with us and supporting those who serve!

Leadership is more than the rank we wear. It's the trust we earn, the people we serve, and the responsibility we carry forward.

On Oct. 6, 2026, Coast Guardsmen, family members, and distinguished guests gathered at Coast Guard Island in Alameda, California, to witness a defining milestone in Southwest District Commander Rear Adm. Jeffrey W. Novak's career as he was promoted to two-star admiral.

Presided over by Pacific Area Commander Vice Adm. Joseph R. Buzzella, the ceremony also welcome Rear Adm. Jason P. Tama as the new deputy commander of Pacific Area, succeeding Novak, who had served in the position concurrently with his command of Southwest District.

As one flag was lowered and another prepared to rise, we reflected on a tradition far greater than any individual: the enduring commitment behind it. It marks the continuation of dedicated leadership, selfless service, and expanded responsibility for the men and women who safeguard our great nation.

Congratulations to all.

Semper Paratus.

U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles - Long Beach incident management department members responded to a report of a vessel discharging oil while moored at a pier.

The IMD crew inspected the vessel and attempted to contact the owner. After the responsible parties denied ownership and due to the vessel’s deteriorating condition, the crew activated the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to hire contractors to place containment boom around the vessel and remove hazardous substances.

Abandoned and derelict vessels can pose significant risks to the marine environment, create hazards to navigation and disrupt the flow of commerce. The Coast Guard works with federal, state and local partners to address these hazards, protect waterways and keep maritime commerce flowing safely and efficiently.
