PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT: PHONE SCAMS

From the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office

Date: September 16, 2026

The Dyer County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind our community to be vigilant regarding ongoing phone scams targeting residents. We have received reports of individuals impersonating Sheriff's Office representatives with the intent to deceive and defraud. The scammers will attempt to obtain payment from you by claiming they are satisfying a jury duty subpoena, arrest warrants, and any myriad of other things.

This will NEVER be legitimate!

Important Points to Remember:

1. Never Give Personal Information: Do not provide your personal information, including Social Security numbers, bank account details, or credit/debit card numbers over the phone to anyone claiming to represent the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office.

2. Common Scams:
- Bond Scams: Scammers may claim that a loved one is in jail and that immediate payment is required to secure their release.
- Ankle Monitor Scams: You may receive calls stating that your loved one is required to pay a fee related to an electronic ankle monitor.
- Grand Jury Indictment: Some calls may threaten legal action or indicate that you are under investigation without any legitimate basis.

3. Verify Calls: If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and contact the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office directly at 731-285-2802 to verify the authenticity of the claim.

4. Report Scams: If you suspect you have been contacted by a scammer, please report the incident to the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office. Your call can help us protect others in our community.

5. Caller ID: You can’t always trust your caller ID in these instances. The caller ID may actually say “Dyer County Sheriff’s Office” which is called “spoofing”.

Remember, the Sheriff's Office will never ask for personal information over the phone or require payment for legal matters in this manner. Stay informed and protect yourself and your loved ones from scams.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Sincerely,

Sheriff Grant Montgomery
Dyer County Sheriff’s Office
