The difference between Poughkeepsie’s handling of multiple fires at the old Hudson River State Hospital, and Albany’s handling of the Kenwood fire and its aftermath, is stark and disappointing.

We hope that positive things happen at both sites in the near future.

𝗪𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗯𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺.

The Times Union's June 6 front page story covers the latest proposal for the former Kenwood Academy campus: a 500,000-square-foot data center anchored tech campus, with an estimated $570 million construction cost, and a request for up to 180 megawatts of power from the state grid.

The developer describes it as an "edge" data center — smaller than hyperscale facilities. State legislators said “not so fast” and passed a one-year moratorium on data center approvals at the end of Session that awaits the Governor's signature.

The 76-acre Kenwood property — the former Doane Stuart campus and Sacred Heart boarding school before that — still holds the memories of generations of students and sisters who lived, learned, and are buried there. Any plan for this land must honor that history.

Preserve Kenwood will continue to keep a close eye on this “proposal” but at this point it does not seem to represent a plausible path forward, or a serious threat.

The real danger is the on going years of complacency.

"You could hardly pick a worse site for a data center," says the founder of a group dedicated to preserving Albany's Kenwood campus.

Today marks the third anniversary of Preserve Kenwood. From the start our goal was a straightforward one - to engage civic leaders and community groups in proactively planning for a better future for the Kenwood site.

In the past three years there has been far too little progress. While spring normally brings new hope for a brighter tomorrow, as time passes, it becomes increasingly difficult to draw attention to this neglected site, and all of the missed opportunities it represents.
