I was deeply disturbed to learn of the shooting incident early Sunday morning that claimed the life of another child in our city. No child in our city deserves to die due to gun violence and no child in our city should possess a fi***rm.
We have a systemic problem in Albany when it comes to young people’s access to guns and we must do everything in our power to combat this problem. Our Police Department, in partnership with Councilmembers, the Mayor’s Office of Violence Prevention, and a host of community partners, are working aggressively to reduce youth violence in our city. The City continues to strengthen investments in the Mayor’s Office of Violence Prevention, ensure our community organizations are coordinated with law enforcement, and increase preventative measures to address youth violence in our city. However, this work cannot be the responsibility of law enforcement, community organizers, or the City of Albany alone.
I am urgently calling on all partners, including our parents and caregivers, to work with us. It will take a coordinated response from all relevant parties to get our young people the support and resources they need to thrive in our city. Our entire city’s thoughts are with the families of the victims of this tragic incident. One death in our city is one too many.
