Our hearts and care go out to the Bend community, schools, and families experiencing grief and shock from last week. Grief and trauma can look very different depending on age and many other factors. Below is a helpful resource from the Child Mind Institute.

"In the wake of a traumatic event such as episodes of violence or a natural disaster, your support and reassurance can help children with trauma. Your support can help them manage their fears, feel safe, guide them through their grief, and recover in a healthy way.

This guide was assembled by psychiatrists, psychologists and mental health experts who specialize in crisis situations. It offers simple tips on what to expect, what to do and what to look out for. If you or your children require assistance from a mental health professional, do not hesitate to ask a doctor or other health care provider for a recommendation." As the seasons change, driving conditions do too. Fall can bring fog, rain, slick roads, shorter daylight hours, and increased wildlife activity.

Keep these safety reminders in mind as you hit the road:
🚗 Buckle up—every trip, every time.
🚌 Slow down in school zones and watch for school buses.
🌫️ Use low beams when driving in fog.
🍂 Slow down and increase following distance on wet or slick roads.
🦌 Stay alert for wildlife, especially around dawn and dusk.
🔧 Check your tires, wipers, fluids and lights—and keep an emergency kit in your vehicle.

Enjoy the season, Oregon, and stay safe on the road! 🍁

Honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day together! Today is a wonderful opportunity for families to celebrate, learn, and recognize the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous communities.

Here are a few meaningful ways to observe the day with children:

Learn the history: Discover whose ancestral land you live on together using resources like Native-Land.ca.

Read Indigenous authors: Pick up children’s books written by Indigenous creators to explore vibrant stories and traditions.

Listen to stories: Watch educational videos or listen to Native music and oral storytelling traditions.

Read more in DELC's website to find more resources!

Today we recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day, observed in Oregon since 2021. At DELC, honoring Tribal sovereignty and supporting Indigenous children and families is central to our work in early learning.
