🚒🔥 TRAINING FOR THE HEAT. PREPARING FOR THE UNEXPECTED.

This week, members of the Westmere Fire Department participated in a live structural burn training focused on basement fires.

Basement fires present unique challenges for firefighters. Limited access, reduced visibility, high temperatures, and the potential for rapidly changing fire conditions make these incidents especially dangerous.

During this training, our members had the opportunity to practice operating in a realistic fire environment while focusing on:

🔥 Fire Behavior - Understanding how fire, heat, and smoke move through a structure, particularly when the fire originates below ground level.

🚒 Hose Line Advancement – Practicing techniques for advancing hose lines and applying water effectively in challenging conditions.

🪜 Access and Egress – Recognizing the challenges of entering and exiting basement areas while maintaining safe escape routes.

📢 Communication and Coordination – Working together as a crew, maintaining accountability, and communicating as conditions change.

🧠 Situational Awareness – Identifying changing fire conditions, recognizing potential hazards, and making decisions in a demanding environment.
Live fire training allows our members to take the skills they practice during regular drills and apply them under more realistic conditions.

It also reinforces an important lesson: No two fires are the same, and preparation is what allows firefighters to adapt when conditions change.

At Westmere, training doesn't stop once you become a firefighter. Our members continue developing their skills, strengthening their teamwork, and preparing for the emergencies they may face in our community.

🔥 Train hard. Train smart. Stay prepared.

Because when the next alarm sounds, our community depends on us to be prepared.
