I joined the Albany Rotary Club today for its 5th Annual First Responders Recognition Luncheon, honoring Albany Firefighter Nicholas Vita and Police Detectives Jacob Sopchak and Bryan Roche.

These are individuals who have faced dangerous situations, putting their own safety on the line to protect others. Their courage, quick thinking and commitment to our community deserve recognition.

Their service goes beyond responding to emergencies. It’s also about building relationships, showing up for neighbors and going above and beyond for the communities they serve.

Thank you to the Albany Rotary Club for recognizing these first responders, and to all those who work every day to keep our community safe.

Hi, I’m Sam Fein, Albany’s Chief City Auditor 👋

As an independently elected official, my job is to provide oversight of City government and help make sure public resources are being used responsibly.

Whether you’ve been following along for a while or you’re new here, welcome!

I’ll be using this page to share updates on our audits, City finances, and the work happening in and around Albany.

Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoples Day and Frances Xavier Cabrini Day.

While these observances honor different histories, both remind us of the importance of recognizing those who came before us, respecting those who are here today and building a community where everyone belongs.

Proud to support our Chief of Staff, Anton Konev, as he continues his service with the 109th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Guard.

I recently received the Patriot Award from Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), recognizing the importance of supporting service members in the workplace.

Thank you to Anton for his service, to the 109th Airlift Wing’s Wing Chaplain for being part of this recognition, and to ESGR for the award.

Those who serve our country deserve our support here at home, too.

Today, our Office of Audit & Control officially released the Albany for All Audit Report.

The audit identified significant gaps in budgeting, financial oversight, recordkeeping and reporting related to the City’s $25 million Albany for All initiative.

These findings raise serious concerns about how public funds were managed and highlight the need for stronger financial controls, greater transparency and accountability.

Our responsibility doesn’t end with identifying these issues. The report also outlines recommendations to address them, strengthen oversight and help ensure taxpayer dollars are used as intended.

We’ve broken down some of the key findings and next steps in the slides below.

The full audit report, along with the responses, is available on the City of Albany website: https://www.albanyny.gov/1928/Audit-Reports

Today, on the third anniversary of October 7th, I mourn the innocent Israeli victims who were brutally murdered by Hamas, as well as the hostages and survivors whose lives were forever changed. Witnessing the horrors of that day was deeply painful, especially as a Jew.

While this is a day of remembrance for the victims of the October 7th massacre, I feel it’s important to express that I am also grieving for the tens of thousands of innocent Palestinian civilians who have been killed since that day. Honoring human life means mourning every innocent life lost.

While I don’t feel now is the time to go too deep into the politics of the conflict, I want to firmly state my belief that all people deserve to live with security, freedom, and human rights. For the sake of everyone living in Israel and Palestine, we desperately need a long-term peaceful solution that guarantees true safety and self-determination for both Israelis and Palestinians.

There’s a lot to recognize this October!

October gives us many reasons to come together, recognize one another and learn from the experiences of those around us.

Some are opportunities to celebrate. Others are reminders to raise awareness, show support and keep important conversations going.

This month, and every month, let’s keep showing up for one another. 🤝

Today’s Times Union article offers an early look at some of the findings from our audit of the Albany for All program.

Later this week, we will release the full audit publicly, including our complete findings and recommendations.

Our team has spent months reviewing records, tracing expenditures and working to provide Albany residents with a clear accounting of how these funds were managed, what obligations remain and where stronger safeguards are needed.

We look forward to sharing our work with Albany residents and continuing the conversation about how we can strengthen oversight within the City of Albany.

It was great to be back at UAlbany today, spending time with students at Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy.

I joined Libby Post and Chloe Pierce for a great conversation about campaigns, government, public service, and some of the lessons we’ve learned along the way.

I especially appreciated the students’ questions and hearing about their own interests in public service and making a difference in their communities.

Thank you to Professor Ashley Fox and the students for having us!
