Today, we honor and remember Fabian Vanegas, a Thruway Authority Laborer who lost his life on this day in 1996 while working alongside the roadway.

His legacy serves as a reminder that the men and women working on our highways are real people with families, friends and loved ones waiting for them to return home safely each day.

When you see emergency vehicles, hazard vehicles, or roadway crews, slow down, move over safely and stay alert. Lives depend on it. ❀️🦺

STATEMENT BY THRUWAY AUTHORITY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FRANK G. H***E, ESQ.

It is with deep sadness that I announce that Jamil B. Wilson, a dedicated Thruway Maintenance Worker in our Cross Westchester Expressway Maintenance Section, tragically passed away yesterday. Jamil was 47 years old and has worked for the Thruway Authority for nearly six years. Jamil and other employees were performing mowing operations on the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) in White Plains when he was struck by a vehicle. The other crew members were not injured.

Our maintenance employees are the heart and soul of this organization. Roadside workers risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of all drivers on the road, and Jamil embodied that very dedication and commitment. He is survived by his life-long partner, Taidra, and their two children. He was described by all who knew him as a devoted father who loved talking about his kids. He was an all-around friendly guy who got along with everyone, loved being adventurous in life and was the first to show up for work everyday.

The entire Thruway family is heartbroken and mourns the loss of Jamil, and we will keep his family and loved ones in our thoughts and prayers during this tremendously difficult time.

New York State Police are investigating the crash.

🚧 Ten years ago this month, we lost our friend and colleague Ron Deming because a driver failed to move over.

On this National Move Over Day, we remind you that our crews are real people with families waiting for them at home.

Slow down and safely move over for all stopped vehicles. It could save someone's life.

The safest place to be when you see roadside workers is in the lane away from them.

Today's National Move Over Day is a reminder that the people working along our roads have families waiting for them at home.

Move Over. Slow Down. Stay Alert. πŸš§πŸ’™

🚧 Today is National Move Over Day.

Every day, Thruway employees, tow operators, first responders and other roadside workers are just a few feet away from live traffic while doing their jobs.

If you see flashing lights ahead, move over when it's safe to do so. If you can't move over, slow down.

A simple choice can save a life. πŸ’™

Since the start of the year, New York State Police Troop T has issued more than 4,100 Move Over violations on the Thruway system.

The Move Over Law is not about issuing tickets. It's not about inconvenience. It's about making sure everyone gets home safely.

When you see any stopped vehicle on the side of the road - slow down and safely move over. It's a simple action, but it can make all the difference.
