This week's EMS Clinician Highlight is Mikayla!
Mikayla has been with the department for five and a half years, starting out as an EMT and then continuing as a paramedic. She has recently become a RN, and will soon be leaving our department to work at a local ER. She reminds us that, in EMS, “What we do matters. We have the opportunity to make a difference on a person's worst day. No matter the patient outcome, how minimal our impact may feel, or length of time we spend with our patients, we not only make someone feel physically better, but also safe, heard, and supported. That's what it's all about. That's one of the reasons I went through nursing school. I want to help people on days that seem impossible for them.”
In her time with our department, Mikayla has truly gone above and beyond to make a difference. She has helped organized donation drives to provide support to the Schenectady City Mission, delivering hygiene items and other necessities to those who need them most.
Outside of work and school, she carries on the legacy of her Sicilian grandparents through Italian-American traditions: holidays, family gatherings, cooking with her Nonni, tomato picking in late summer to make sauce, and filling cannolis. She also enjoys concerts with her boyfriend Matt, jetskiing on the lake, baking and gardening, and cheering on the Yankees. Mikayla is also a proud new godmother.
Her favorites? Soft pretzel bites with cheese, while jamming out to some “dad rock,” and stopping by Penny Lane Italian Ice, especially on those hot summer days on shift!
Best of luck to Mikayla, we’ll see you on-duty in the ER!
