“I agree with the county executive and will even take it a step further when it comes to the state’s unfunded mandates,” said County Legislature Minority Leader Frank Mauriello. “The fact that these unfunded mandates will soon exceed the county’s total tax levy is unsustainable. It is unconscionable that the governor and state legislators...continue to pass down these costs to local taxpayers without even attempting to solve the problem at their level.”

The county executive and state leaders traded barbs over who bears what costs in Albany County. “I’m disappointed in my state delegation,” McCoy said.

"This colossal failure of governance raises urgent questions about checks and balances at City Hall. Did ex-Mayor Kathy Sheehan, herself a former city treasurer, not realize what was going on? If not, why not? How about all those other officials whom voters elect to engage in meaningful oversight — the Common Council; the city treasurer; the city auditor — who’s now the mayor?"

The city can't afford any more budgets built on wishful thinking. Mayor Applyrs needs to show that City Hall has learned from its past failures.
