The HCANYS Board came together in Saratoga Springs this week for two days of focused discussion on the priorities, strategies and leadership needed to strengthen New York’s home care sector in the year ahead.

The retreat gave Board members an opportunity to step back from the day-to-day and focus on the bigger picture: strengthening advocacy, advancing member value, building a stronger voice for home care, and preparing for the policy and operational challenges ahead. The discussion also extended beyond home care, with an important conversation among leaders from across New York’s health care system, including Zina Cary of MSSNY; Sabrina Barrett of LeadingAge New York; Kathy Preston of the New York Health Plan Association; and Tom Quatroche and Amy Nickson of HANYS. The panel explored opportunities for greater collaboration and coordinated advocacy on the issues affecting health care providers and the patients they serve.

The year ahead will bring significant challenges for home care, and the HCANYS Board is focused on ensuring the Association is prepared to meet them with a clear strategy, a strong voice and meaningful action.

Hudson Mohawk AHEC sponsored a Sept. 23rd event at SUNY Adirondack focusing on health care pathways, with an emphasis on nursing. Adrianne Mann from HCR joined the HCA team and spoke on the panel to prospective health care students. Pictured with Ms. Mann (center) are Wendy Parker, HCANYS VP for Program Service & Development, and Celisia Street, HCANYS VP for Workforce Development and Innovation. HCA attended the event to promote awareness of nursing careers in home health, and generate interest in job shadowing and clinical internships in the home health sector.

Is your agency ready for its next emergency preparedness survey?
Emergency preparedness plans may look fine on paper. The real test comes when a surveyor starts asking questions.
At HCANYS’ October 8 Emergency Preparedness Virtual Conference, you’ll get practical guidance on:
• Common emergency preparedness deficiencies
• Corrections agencies need to make
• What CHHAs, LHCSAs and hospices should have in place
• Issues that can create problems when surveyors arrive
The day also includes a live tabletop exercise built around a norovirus outbreak—giving agencies an opportunity to think through how they would respond to a realistic emergency.

Take the time now to make sure your plan is ready before the next emergency—or the next survey—puts it to the test.

HCANYS regional meetings are bringing the conversation directly to members and state lawmakers.
The recent Rochester meeting, hosted by HCR Home Care, brought HCANYS members together with local lawmakers and legislative staff to discuss the issues shaping home care, and the priorities that will matter as the 2027 legislative session approaches.

With two regional meetings still ahead, there is more opportunity for members to make their voices heard:

📍 Hudson Valley — October 6
Hyatt House White Plains
📍 NYC & Long Island — October 15
The Conference Center, 130 East 59th Street, NYC

These briefings provide more than updates on policy, regulation and operations. They give members a direct opportunity to share what they are seeing in their communities, raise concerns and help shape the issues HCANYS will carry forward in 2027.

If you have an issue HCANYS should be addressing in Albany or Washington, this is your opportunity to bring it to the table.
