On August 26th, at the 2026 North Carolina Prescribed Fire Council Annual Meeting, the team at Morrow Mountain State Park was honored with the ‘Coveted Fire Pot Award for Prescribed Burner of the Year’ for NC State Parks!

This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our park staff, their ongoing partnership with the N.C. Forest Service, and the invaluable support and assistance from North Carolina State Parks fire personnel.

Prescribed fire is an important tool for protecting our natural resources, reducing hazardous fuels, and maintaining healthy ecosystems. This award represents the teamwork and commitment that make that work possible.

Congratulations to the entire Morrow Mountain State Park team! 🔥🏆

The 4th of July is going to be a hot one here at Morrow Mountain! The National Weather Service (NWS) has posted that the HeatRisk will be categorized as an index 3 (major risk), increasing to an index 4 (EXTREME risk) on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Because of this, park staff are advising visitors to come out to enjoy the park ONLY after they are adequately prepared. That means bring sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and more water than you think you will need for everyone in your party.

Make sure also to be alert and knowledgeable of heat related illnesses. Know the warning signs. Dizziness, heavy sweating and nausea can be signs of heat exhaustion. Confusion, slurred speech or loss of consciousness are signs of heat stroke. If someone is experiencing heat stroke, call 911 immediately.

When the weather gets like this, hiking, horseback riding, and boating can all turn into dangerous activities if you are not fully prepared. If you are planning on coming to the park this weekend, limit outdoor exposure, stay alert, stay safe, take breaks, and STAY HYRDATED! Also, please take care of your pets! Don’t leave them in a vehicle, and be aware of extreme heat from asphalt and concrete burning their feet.
