This week is Fire Prevention Week (October 4–10, 2026). This year, the focus is on the everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep homes and communities safer.

Tips to help keep you & your home safe:

-SOFT SURFACE? HARD PASS. Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or bare floor.

-FEELS HOT? STOP USING IT. Stop using your device if it feels very hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.

-FULLY CHARGED? TIME TO UNPLUG. Unplug your device when it is fully charged.

-FOR TOOLS AND RIDES, CHARGE OUTSIDE. Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging.

🚫🔥 STATEWIDE BURN BAN REMAINS IN EFFECT 🔥🚫

Stanly County remains under a statewide burn ban due to continued dry conditions and elevated fire danger.

🚫 All open burning is prohibited, including:
• Burning leaves or yard debris
• Campfires
• Bonfires
• Agricultural burning

Local fire marshals have also issued bans that prohibit burning within 100 feet of any occupied structure anywhere in Stanly County.

🌡️ With high temperatures, low humidity, and no significant rainfall in the forecast, conditions remain dangerous. Fires in wooded areas can burn hotter, spread quickly, and require extensive resources to control.

⚠️ Important Reminders:
• Violations may result in fines
• Grills and gas cooking devices are allowed (unless otherwise restricted)
• Report wildfires or suspicious fire activity by calling 911

⏳ There is no timeline for lifting the burn ban at this time. It will remain in place until we receive significant, widespread rainfall.
