Welcome to Wildlife Wednesday! We continue our month of misunderstood animals with spiders.

Spiders eat a LOT of insects. A single spider can eat about 2,000 insects a year! This consumption of insects can reduce the spread of diseases like malaria and the Zika virus to humans. Spiders eat common household pests like mosquitoes, flies, and roaches and provide us with practical, chemical-free, and eco-friendly home pest control! Spiders are also biodiversity indicators. A rich diversity of spiders signifies a healthy, balanced ecosystem and a sign of good air quality. If spiders are comfortable living in your home, it’s likely you are maintaining a healthy living space!

Welcome to Wildlife Wednesday! Our month of misunderstood animals continues with snakes.

Snakes commonly evoke fear in people due to their “creepy” behaviors like hissing, striking, and flicking their tongues. However, these behaviors serve important purposes. Hissing and striking are often warning signs to humans or other animals to stay away because they are too close for the snake’s comfort. Snakes flick their tongues to collect chemical information and survey their surroundings. Snakes also serve as pest control in the environment by ensuring mice and rat populations are balanced and do not become overpopulated.

Welcome to Wildlife Wednesday! For the month of October, we will highlight some commonly misunderstood wildlife and explain why they are beneficial to our ecosystem.

First up, are skunks and opossums! These nocturnal mammals are great at pest control. They spend their time eating ticks, worms, insects, grubs, beetles, and young rodents that can cause harm to crops and gardens. These animals are also scavengers and help reduce the spread of disease by feeding on carrion. Opossums have naturally low body temperatures, so they are highly resistant to the rabies virus. Opossums can also reduce the spread of dangerous tick-borne illnesses by consuming thousands of ticks each year!
