What a day! Senior Day at the Fair took place Wednesday, October 7, at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair, and the community showed up in a big way.

We gave out 400 tickets to individuals 55 and over, not counting the vendors and caregivers who brought seniors along. All told, we estimate over 500 people joined us, including community residents and folks from all three of the area's larger nursing homes.

One of our favorite moments: a senior won a pie at the cake walk, pictured here with Ann Waggoner and Alana Lykins showing it off.

¡Qué día tan especial! El Día de las Personas Mayores en la Feria se llevó a cabo el miércoles 7 de octubre en la Feria Estatal del Este de Nuevo México, y la comunidad respondió de una manera increíble.
Repartimos 400 boletos a personas de 55 años en adelante, sin contar a los vendedores y cuidadores que acompañaron a los adultos mayores. En total, estimamos que más de 500 personas participaron, incluyendo residentes de la comunidad y personas de los tres hogares de ancianos más grandes de la zona.
Uno de nuestros momentos favoritos: una persona mayor ganó un pay en el juego de cake walk (una caminata musical con premios), y aquí aparece junto a Ann Waggoner y Alana Lykins mostrando su premio.

The first real cold snap of the season is on its way, so here's how to stay safe:

🌡️ Keep your home at 68°F or warmer
🧤 Bundle up before heading outside (hat, scarf, gloves, water-resistant coat)
👀 Check on older neighbors or family living alone.
🔥 Keep space heaters 3 feet from anything flammable

Where in NM? This week: Madrid 📍

Perched along the Turquoise Trail in Santa Fe County, Madrid became a booming coal company town in the 1890s, growing to nearly 2,500 people, complete with its own schools, hospital, and company store.

Fun fact: When the mines closed in the 1950s, Madrid nearly became a true ghost town, until artists and craftspeople began moving in during the 1970s. Today it's a thriving creative community, and the Mine Shaft Tavern, that served miners over a century ago, still welcomes visitors today.

¿Dónde en NM? Esta semana: Madrid 📍

A lo largo del Turquoise Trail en el condado de Santa Fe, Madrid se convirtió en un próspero pueblo minero de carbón en la década de 1890. Llegó a tener casi 2,500 habitantes, con sus propias escuelas, hospital y tienda de la compañía.

Dato curioso: Cuando las minas cerraron en la década de 1950, Madrid casi se convirtió en un pueblo fantasma, hasta que artistas y artesanos comenzaron a mudarse allí en la década de 1970. Hoy es una próspera comunidad creativa, y la Mine Shaft Tavern, que atendía a los mineros hace más de un siglo, sigue recibiendo visitantes.

Taos County families: the Kinship Caregiver Pilot Program is now accepting applications. The program connects kinship caregivers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and family friends raising kids, with services, legal resources, and a monthly stipend so children can stay with family.

"Kinship caregivers are doing the important work of keeping children connected to their families and communities," said Aging Department Cabinet Secretary Emily Kaltenbach.

Taos joins Rio Arriba and San Juan Counties, with 83 families served statewide so far.

Familias del condado de Taos: el Programa Piloto de Cuidadores por Parentesco ya está aceptando solicitudes. El programa conecta a los cuidadores por parentesco (abuelos, tías, tíos y amigos de la familia que están criando a niños) con servicios, recursos legales y un estipendio mensual para que los niños puedan permanecer con su familia.

“Los cuidadores por parentesco están haciendo el importante trabajo de mantener a los niños conectados con sus familias y comunidades”, dijo Emily Kaltenbach, secretaria del Departamento de Envejecimiento.

Taos se une a los condados de Río Arriba y San Juan, y hasta ahora se han atendido 83 familias en todo el estado.

Ageism shows up in small moments, being talked over, assumed less capable, or written off before given a chance. Ageism Awareness Day is a reminder to notice it. But awareness is only the starting point.

Want to turn that awareness into action? Join a conversation with colleagues who have used reframing principles to change how they talk and think about aging in their own work. They'll share how it sharpened their eye for ageism in everyday messages and practices, and what it inspired them to do differently.
