Stay warm. Stay safe! As temperatures drop, Bernalillo County Fire & Rescue reminds you to keep heating safety a priority.

• Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heaters, fireplaces and wood stoves.
• Keep children away from heaters and open fires.
• Fireplace glass and screens can stay hot long after the fire is out. Avoid touching them, and keep children away to prevent burns.
• Turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
• Never use your oven to heat your home.
• Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified professional.
• Use a sturdy fireplace screen, and let ashes cool completely before placing them in a metal container away from your home.
• Test smoke alarms monthly, and install and maintain carbon monoxide alarms.

A few simple precautions can help protect your family and your home.

Bernalillo County Fire & Rescue was honored to participate in the 100 Club of New Mexico’s Annual Luncheon today. The 100 Club of New Mexico is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting first responders and their families, particularly in times of injury, tragedy, or loss.

BCFR proudly brought Ladder 38 to display the American flag, our Honor Guard to present the colors, and our Chaplain to offer a meaningful invocation. We are grateful for the opportunity to support an organization that has stood beside first responders and their families and has supported our department in the past.

A special thank you to the Albuquerque Country Club for being such a wonderful host, and to everyone who attended in support of the 100 Club of New Mexico.

Lori has been a true cornerstone of our department—someone you could rely on in any situation, on any call, and on any day. Today, South Battalion B-Shift participated in a regional training drill focused on vehicle extrication.

Crews worked on tool familiarization, vehicle anatomy, and most importantly, teamwork. These drills give firefighters the opportunity to sharpen their skills, understand their equipment, and work together to safely and efficiently accomplish the mission.

Training like this is vital. When every second counts, preparation and teamwork make the difference.

Strong crews are built through consistent training.

🚒 Training never stops!

Bernalillo County Fire & Rescue’s Station 36 B Shift recently conducted ladder truck training, simulating the transition from an aerial ladder onto a high-rise roof.

This demanding training takes skill, courage, and teamwork. Every drill helps our firefighters build confidence and stay prepared when our community needs them most.

Thank you, Station 36 B Shift, for your continued dedication to training and keeping Bernalillo County safe!

BEHIND THE SCENES | PHYSICAL AGILITY TESTING
Firefighter candidates began the physical agility portion of our hiring process.

Before testing began, our Division Chief of Training walked candidates through the standards, expectations, and each event they would be required to complete.

Then it was time to get to work.

Candidates started with a 3-mile course wearing a 45-pound weighted vest, which must be completed in 45 minutes and 30 seconds or less.

After a 30-minute rest period, candidates moved on to the Combat Challenge, where they have 6 minutes and 30 seconds to complete a series of job-related physical tasks:

🔥 Five flights of stairs carrying a hose pack
🔥 Hose roll hoist
🔥 Kaiser sled
🔥 Serpentine course
🔥 Charged hose line drag
🔥 Dummy drag to the finish

These events are designed to challenge strength, endurance, and the ability to continue working while fatigued, all critical demands of the fire service.

This is just Day One.

Testing continues tomorrow and Thursday as our firefighter candidates work through the final two days of the physical agility process.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to move one step closer to joining the fire service.
