On October 14, 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was announced as the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for his unwavering commitment to nonviolent resistance and the fight for racial equality.

At just 35 years old, Dr. King became the youngest person at that time to receive this prestigious honor. He would travel to Oslo, Norway, to accept the award in December of 1964.

During his acceptance speech he stated:

“After contemplation, I conclude that this award which I receive on behalf of that movement is a profound recognition that nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral question of our time – the need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to violence and oppression.”

Today, we honor and celebrate the Indigenous Peoples of New Mexico, their rich cultures, enduring traditions, resilience, and invaluable contributions to our communities and our nation. Indigenous Peoples’ Day is an opportunity to recognize the histories, voices, and sovereignty of Native Nations and to reflect on the ongoing pursuit of justice, dignity, and equality.

As we honor this day, we also recognize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to civil rights and solidarity among communities working toward freedom and equality. His engagement with Native American leaders and support for Indigenous rights reflect the importance of standing together in the pursuit of justice for all.

The New Mexico Martin Luther King Jr. Commission honors the Indigenous peoples of our state and reaffirms the enduring values of respect, understanding, and equality.
