72 requests for help. ONE DAY in New Mexico. Not enough resources.

On September 4, 2024, domestic violence programs participating in a statewide survey in New Mexico were unable to meet 72 requests for services in just 24 hours.

These requests went unmet because programs lacked sufficient resources, funding, or staffing.

Behind those numbers are people seeking safety, stability, and a way forward.

Domestic violence awareness is about more than recognizing the problem. It's about ensuring that when someone reaches out for help, the resources are there to respond.

At S.A.F.E. House, we see firsthand how important access to emergency shelter, advocacy, counseling, and housing assistance can be for victims of intimate partner domestic violence and their children.

Awareness matters. Resources save lives.

“Why didn’t you just leave?”

Leave with WHAT?

No money. No car. No access to the bank account. Sometimes no job—and someone making damn sure you stay that way.

💜 “Why don’t they just leave?”

It’s one of the most common questions asked about victims of intimate partner domestic violence — but leaving an abusive relationship is rarely that simple.

A victim may be worried about where they and their children will live. They may have little or no access to money. They may have been isolated from friends and family, threatened, monitored, or made to believe they cannot survive on their own.

And sometimes, leaving can increase the danger.

Instead of asking, “Why don’t they leave?” we can ask a different question:

“What barriers are keeping them from leaving safely — and how can we support them?”

Victims deserve compassion, support, and the freedom to make decisions about their own safety without judgment.

If someone you know is experiencing intimate partner domestic violence, believe them. Listen without judgment. Let them know that help is available — and allow them to decide what comes next.

S.A.F.E. House’s confidential crisis hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

You are not alone. Support is just a phone call away. (505) 247-4219

💜 Domestic violence isn’t always physical.

Abuse doesn’t have to leave a bruise to cause harm.

It can look like controlling someone’s money, monitoring their phone or location, isolating them from friends and family, using threats or intimidation, constantly belittling them, controlling where they go or who they see, or using s*x as a means of power and control.

At its core, intimate partner domestic violence is often about power and control — and it can take many forms. That’s why recognizing the signs matters.

Throughout Domestic Violence Awareness Month, S.A.F.E. House is helping our community better understand what abuse can look like, because awareness can be an important first step toward helping ourselves or someone we care about.

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their relationship. 💜

Domestic violence does not have a zip code. It does not belong to one neighborhood, one culture, one income level, or one kind of family. It can happen anywhere—and believing “it doesn’t happen here” can leave survivors feeling unseen, unheard, and alone.

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we are challenging the myths that allow abuse to remain hidden.

When a survivor speaks, believe them.
When someone reaches out, listen without judgment.
When abuse is happening in our communities, refuse to look away.

The cost of believing the myths is too high. Silence protects abuse. Awareness creates space for truth, accountability, safety, and change.

Our community. Our responsibility. Our change.

Challenge the myth. Believe survivors. Build safer communities.
