Today Engine 23 visited with some 4th graders from Rudolfo Anaya Elementary School. They discussed fire safety, a career in the fire service and got a show and tell of the gear and fire engine.

Rudolfo Anaya is just down the road from Fire Station 23 which opened just over a year ago. Many teachers and students attended the grand opening of their neighborhood firehouse.

Thanks to the crew of Engine 23 for the educational show and tell and thanks to the students and staff of Rudolfo Anaya for being engaged participants and active listeners.

On October 19, 2026 just after 12:30pm, AFR was requested to the Tanoan Golf Course to assist NM Game and Fish with a mama bear and two cubs in a tree.

Game and Fish sedated and trapped mama bear. The crew from Station 16 assisted getting the bear into a cage.

Several options were discussed on how to get the cubs out of the tree.

Getting an aerial apparatus into position to access the cubs would have been challenging. It was determined that the safest course of action would be for NM Game and Fish to set traps for the cubs. AFR crews were cleared from the scene and NM Game and Fish were preparing to set the traps for the two bears still in the tree.

Never a dull moment.

Jarrod Bottinelli #554

Albuquerque Fire Rescue congratulates Captain Jarrod Bottinelli on his retirement after 35 years of service.

Bott started his career with Albuquerque Fire in 1991 as a member of the 51st Cadet Class. This was the first class at the new fire academy facility. After the academy, he piped at Engine 3 and Engine 4 and became part of the Hazmat Task Force. He promoted to the rank of Driver, taking assignments at Ladder 13 and Ladder 4. Ladder 4 was the last tiller truck Albuquerque Fire would run. Operating that tiller was one of the highlights of his career.

Jarrod promoted to Lieutenant in 1997 and was assigned to Engine 15 before moving to Engine 18. In 2005, he promoted to the rank of Captain and worked in Albuquerque’s busiest districts at Engine 12, Engine 11, and Ladder 5. He bid back to the Hazmat Task Force at Squad 3 in 2013 to put his Chemistry degree to use. This would become his final assignment.

Captain Jarrod Bottinelli will work his final shift as the Captain of Station 13, A-Shift, and complete his assignment at Squad 3. He retires as AFR’s most tenured Captain and ranks second on the overall seniority list, a legendary accomplishment. Captain Bottinelli will be remembered for his candid and sometimes sarcastic on-scene reports as Safety Officer and his depth of knowledge in the field of Hazmat. He once estimated that there were 397,426 gallons of water on the floor at Target. It turned out he was exactly correct.

After 35 years of riding around on these trucks and serving the City of Albuquerque, Bott looks forward to doing more paramotor flying, riding motorcycles, skiing, snowboarding, playing golf, and traveling.

Captain Bottinelli leaves his brothers and sisters with this: “I want to thank everyone for a great career. All the firefighters I have worked with are who made these 35 years possible. It sure has been entertaining, but this is the final roll call…Now go do stuff!”

Congratulations, Captain, and thank you for 35 years of service. Now it is time for you to go do stuff. Albuquerque Area Firefighters IAFF Local244
