All of us are trying to get somewhere, and driving predictably is key to sharing the road! For the safety of all drivers, the turning lane and shoulder are never to be used as passing lanes.

As warmer weather arrives, the Alcoa Police Department has seen an increase in complaints involving electric dirt bikes and similar off-road electric motorcycles being operated by youth and adults on public streets and paved greenway trails. We will be on the lookout this summer to enforce these laws.

For everyone’s safety, we want to clarify Tennessee law regarding these vehicles.
Under Tennessee law, many electric dirt bikes are considered “off-highway motor vehicles” because they are designed primarily for off-road use. Tennessee Code Annotated prohibits off-highway motor vehicles from being operated on public roads except under very limited circumstances.

In addition, many of these electric dirt bikes do NOT meet Tennessee’s legal definition of an electric bicycle because they:
• exceed the 750-watt limit
• can travel at speeds beyond lawful e-bike classifications
• do not have operable pedals
• are manufactured as off-road motorcycles rather than bicycles

As a result, many popular electric dirt bikes are not lawful for operation on:
• municipal streets
• sidewalks
• paved greenway trails
• bicycle/pedestrian paths

These laws exist for safety reasons. Riders on these vehicles are at significant risk of serious injury in vehicle crashes, and pedestrians on greenways can also be injured by high-speed electric motorcycles operating in shared-use areas.

Parents are strongly encouraged to closely supervise where these vehicles are ridden and ensure they are operated only in areas where their use is lawful and safe. City streets, sidewalks, parks, and paved greenway trails are prohibited areas. Our goal is education and accident prevention so that everyone can safely enjoy our roadways, parks, and greenway trail systems.

Each patrol squad consists of:
-One patrol sergeant
-Four patrol officers
