There was an audience of 56 people at last Sunday's presentation by Helena Township Historical Society president, Paul DeLange. It covered the history of Alden's Tyler Addition circa 1900 and going forward. This was the third of Paul's Alden talks here in as many years. We thank him for sharing his knowledge of our town!

Watch Out for Online Ad Scams
Online ads are everywhere. Cybercriminals can use these ads to spread malware, steal personal information or direct people to scam websites. This tactic is known as malvertising, or malicious advertising. And because these harmful ads can look legitimate and appear alongside normal content on trusted websites, they can be difficult to recognize.

The National Cybersecurity Alliance recommends taking these steps to reduce your risk:

Keep your software up to date by installing updates for your operating system, browser, and apps and by turning on automatic updates.
Use reputable antivirus and anti-malware security software to detect and block harmful downloads.
Think before clicking an ad. Even trusted sites can have unsafe ads so search for the company or product yourself and visit its website directly. Avoid downloading browser extensions when an ad or website unexpectedly prompts you to do so.
Use a secure browser that can identify potentially dangerous websites and block known harmful content.
Avoid suspicious websites. When choosing apps or browser extensions, read the details carefully and check reviews to make sure you're choosing the real product.
Use strong passwords and multi factor authentication to provide additional protection if criminals attempt to steal your login information.

On Sunday, September 13, Thomas Joseph from the Torch Lake Protection Alliance (TLPA) board of directors gave a presentation discussing the Keep Torch Lake Blue project. Done in collaboration with Three Lakes Association (TLA) and Torch Conservation Center (TCC), it addressed concerns of the increasing amount of benthic algae/golden brown algae and highlighted a 3 year comprehensive study of Torch Lakes conducted by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). USGS has analyzed thousands of data points and is to complete and publish the final report in late 2026 or early 2027.
The conclusions and recommendations based on that report will be shared with all associations and organizations involved in the Chain of Lakes, including all Township and County officials.
The program was well received by those in attendance.
