Comfort and Reassure Your Child 💜

One of the most important things you can give a child is the reassurance that they are not alone.

🤗 Give them a hug or other comforting gesture.
👂 Listen when they want to talk—without judgment or rushing to respond.
💬 Remind them, “You can always come to me. I’m here to help.”
🛡️ Let them know they can talk to you about anything, especially if something makes them feel scared, uncomfortable, or unsafe.

Creating a safe and supportive environment helps children feel heard, valued, and confident that they have a trusted adult in their corner.

Tips for Children Who Have Witnessed Abuse

💜 Put Your Own Oxygen Mask on First

When violence happens, caregivers may feel scared, angry, sad, or overwhelmed. It’s easy to focus only on your child, but taking care of yourself matters too.
Take a moment to breathe, slow down, and ask for support when you need it. Children often look to adults to know how to feel and respond.

It’s okay to have big feelings. It’s okay to ask for help. You don’t have to do this alone.

💜 FRIDAY FACT:

Leaving an abusive relationship isn't always as simple as “just leave.”
Survivors may face financial barriers, threats, children, housing concerns, isolation, transportation issues, or fear of retaliation.

Instead of asking, “Why don't they leave?”

Ask, “How can I support them?” 💜

How to Support a Survivor

Someone you care about may be experiencing domestic violence and you may not know it.

If they choose to talk to you:
💜 Listen without judgment.
💜 Believe them.
💜 Don't blame them.
💜 Respect their choices.
💜 Help them connect with support.

You don't have to have all the answers. You just have to be willing to listen.
