AlexRenew We are an independent public authority managing Alexandria’s wastewater to improve local waterways.

We are Alexandria, Virginia’s regional wastewater treatment provider, treating an average of 38 million gallons of wastewater per day from over 300,000 customers in Alexandria and portions of Fairfax County. Alexandria Renew Enterprises (AlexRenew) is one of the most advanced water resource recovery public utilities in the United States. We clean dirty water to protect our community and the environment. When dirty water flows from your home or business, we get to work turning it into sparkling, clean water.

🌅 This month we're celebrating a year of RiverRenew Plaza, a community waterfront space in Alexandria. The best part? Beneath those panoramic sunrise views is a diversion facility that prevents millions of gallons of combined sewage from overflowing into the Potomac each year. Learn more at the link in our bio.

the solar panels on top of our administrative building generate 13% of the building’s electricity? Our wastewater treatment plant also has solar (including on the new pumping station!) and we’ve completed a study to find additional areas on the plant where we can install solar. This helps AlexRenew advance its sustainability goals while continuing to provide reliable wastewater treatment for the community.

In August, AlexRenew received a fresh batch of Anammox bacteria from Hampton Roads Sanitation District. Anammox, also known as “red bugs” for their red color, are unique because they can remove ammonia from wastewater more efficiently than conventional methods. Thank you to our partners at HRSD for helping make this milestone possible. Together, we're demonstrating how innovation and collaboration can drive a more sustainable future for our waterways and community.
