🌟 Helping our youngest learners become safety S.T.A.R.s!

Thank you to Alexandria Public Schools for sharing this great learning opportunity! Sophia Grabow from Horizon Public Health and Douglas County TZD enjoyed helping preschoolers learn and practice important parking lot safety skills. Building safe habits early helps keep our little ones safe wherever their day takes them! 🌟👏

Details matter. Take a few minutes to check your child’s car seat installation and harness fit. Always follow the car seat manufacturer’s instructions and your vehicle owner’s manual for proper installation and use.

Check the installation: At the belt path, the car seat should move no more than 1 inch side-toside or front-to-back.

Rear-facing: Harness straps should be at or below the child’s shoulders.

Forward-facing: Harness straps should be at or above the child’s shoulders.

Check the harness: The harness should be snug. You should not be able to pinch excess harness webbing at the child’s shoulder.

Check the chest clip: Position the chest clip at armpit level.

Take five minutes today to check the details: from installation to harness fit.

Special moments are meant to be remembered. While capturing every milestone, give their car seat a quick check to make sure it still fits just right for their age and size.

Booster seats help position the vehicle’s lapand-shoulder belt properly on a child’s body. Use a booster seat until the vehicle seat belt fits correctly without one. Take the 5-Step Seat Belt Fit Test. If you answer ‘no’ to any of these questions, keep using the booster.

1. Does the child sit all the way back against the vehicle seat?
2. Do their knees bend comfortably at the edge of the seat?
3. Does the lap belt sit low across the hips, touching the upper thighs?
4. Does the shoulder belt cross the center of the chest and shoulder?
5. Can the child stay in this position for the entire ride?

Take the 5-Step Test before saying goodbye to the booster.
