As Fire Prevention Week wraps up, we want to say a big THANK YOU to all of the fire departments across Kossuth County! ❤️🚒

These men and women are volunteers who choose to answer the call when their communities need them. Most people think of firefighters as the ones who respond to house fires, but the truth is, they do so much more.

These volunteers are some of the unsung heroes of EMS.

They’re the ones keeping us safe on the side of the road while we work accidents. They block traffic, secure dangerous vehicles, and cut away mangled metal so we can reach the people who need us. They witness some of the hardest parts of our job, yet rarely receive recognition for the role they play in helping us help others.

They’re also the ones we call when we need an extra set of hands. We couldn’t begin to count the number of times firefighters have helped us carry critically injured or ill patients out of basements, steep ditches, vehicles, fields, and countless other difficult places.

Rain, snow, freezing temperatures, 2 a.m., or right in the middle of work or family dinner — when we call for help, they show up, time and time again.

And that’s something we never want to take for granted.

From EMS to our partners in FIRE…

THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts. ❤️

Thank you for protecting us while we care for others. Thank you for the long nights, the difficult calls, and the sacrifices you and your families make. Thank you for being the people we can count on when a difficult situation requires more hands, more equipment, and more teamwork.

We couldn’t do what we do without you. 🚒🚑

🔥 ELEVATED FIRE DANGER ACROSS PORTIONS OF IOWA TODAY! 💨

Unseasonably warm temperatures, gusty winds, and low humidity will combine to create an elevated fire risk across portions of western and northern Iowa this Saturday afternoon.

Temperatures will climb well into the 80s across much of the state, with some locations in western Iowa potentially reaching the lower 90s. Meanwhile, strong south to southwest winds will gust between 30 and 40 mph, with a few gusts exceeding 40 mph possible across northwestern Iowa.

As humidity levels drop this afternoon, dry grasses and other vegetation could ignite more easily, allowing fires to spread rapidly in the gusty winds. The greatest concern will be across western and northern Iowa, where the combination of warm temperatures, dry conditions, and strong winds will be most favorable for fire growth.

In addition to the fire danger, gusty winds may produce areas of blowing dust, particularly near agricultural fields, potentially reducing visibility for motorists.

🚒 OPERATION EDITH — TONIGHT! 🚒

All week, we’ve been talking about having an escape plan and knowing two ways out of your home in case of a fire. But there’s one more important piece — having a family meeting spot.

If your family gets out of the house, we need to know everyone is safe. Having a designated meeting spot outside your home makes that possible. It also keeps everyone from going back inside looking for someone who may already be safely out.

Tonight at 6:00 PM, the Algona Fire Department will be out in the community for Operation EDITH (Exit Drills In The Home)!

🏠 Practice your family’s fire escape plan.
🚪 Make sure everyone knows two ways out.
📍 Pick a designated meeting spot outside your home.
🔥 Talk about what to do if the smoke alarm sounds.

And when you’re finished practicing, come out front and wave at us as we go by! 👋🚒

We want to see Algona families taking part and making sure everyone knows what to do before an emergency happens.

Practice tonight. Be ready tomorrow.

🚒🔥 Fire Prevention Week is Here! 🔥🚒

This year’s theme is “Charge Into Fire Safety” with an important reminder that Safe Charging Is a Superpower! ⚡🔋

As we go through Fire Prevention Week, let’s remind our communities about the importance of safe charging practices, especially when it comes to phones, tablets, e-bikes, e-scooters, and other battery-powered devices.

A few simple habits can make a BIG difference:
🔌 Use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
⚡ Don’t charge devices under pillows, blankets, or on beds and couches.
🏠 Keep charging devices where you can see them and away from anything that can burn.
🔥 Stop using batteries or chargers that are damaged, swollen, or unusually hot.

A HUGE thank you to all of our firefighters, fire departments, educators, and community members who continue to make fire safety a priority! đźš’

Thank you for everything you do to educate, protect, and keep our communities safe. Continue doing a great job stressing the importance of fire safety—your efforts truly make a difference!

Let’s CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY together! ⚡🔥🚒

Kossuth County Public Safety Endowment Fund • Established in 2018

The people who answer the call, day or night, are at the heart of our safe and strong community. With a background in law enforcement, Don Tietz founded this fund with a $100,000 investment through the Kossuth County Community Foundation, grounded in the belief that strong communities are built through partnership.

Today, the fund supports the Kossuth County Sheriff's Office, EMS, Algona Police Department, Fire, and Ambulance departments with resources for enhancements and innovation beyond routine budgets.

Since 2020, nearly $30,000 in grants have strengthened the tools, training, and readiness of those who protect our communities.

For those who want to give back, this fund offers a direct and meaningful way to support local law enforcement, EMS, and fire services, now and for generations to come.
