New Illinois Micromobility Law

On August 26, 2026 the State of Illinois signed SB 3484 into law as Public Act 104-0854, establishing new statewide standards for e-bikes, e-scooters, and other electric micromobility devices, such as e-skateboards and e-unicycles. The provisions from this law will go into effect January 1, 2027.

The Algonquin Police Department will be focusing on education and awareness of the new Illinois e-bike and e-scooter laws throughout the fall. Our goal is to help riders understand the current rules, ride safely, and share the road.

Between now and January, officers will be focused on educating riders, answering questions, and addressing violations— giving everyone an opportunity to understand the law.

🎖️ Honor, Tradition, and a Little Road Trip! 🚔

A little over a week ago, two members of the Algonquin Police Department joined their fellow McHenry County Chiefs Honor Guard members for a trip to Springfield, Illinois, where they teamed up with law enforcement agencies from across the state for some valuable hands-on training!

The McHenry County Chiefs Honor Guard had the privilege of serving as the lead instructors, sharing their knowledge and experience in ceremonial duties, including flag folding, casket movement, door guard, and r***e salutes.

But here's the thing about great training... even the teachers get to be students! 📚

While our Honor Guard members were there to teach, they also had the opportunity to exchange ideas, learn new techniques, and pick up a few pointers themselves. Because no matter how much experience you have, there's always something new to learn!

Honor Guard duties are about much more than sharp uniforms and perfectly synchronized movements. They're about honoring those who have served, respecting tradition, and standing alongside our law enforcement family when it matters most.

We're proud of our APD members and the entire McHenry County Chiefs Honor Guard for representing our community, sharing their expertise, and continuing to sharpen their skills.

👏 Great training, great partnerships, and a great reminder that the best instructors never stop learning!

👮‍♂️🚔 Learning, Connecting & Having Fun!

Yesterday, The Algonquin Police Department was excited to welcome the District 300 STARS Program for a tour of the police department and some hands-on police demonstrations!

It was a great opportunity to connect with these amazing students, share what we do, and give them a closer look at the people behind the badge. Thank you for spending the day with us! 💙

Attention Algonquin Residents: Media Release

The Algonquin Police Department is pleased to announce details of the On-Site Assessment. The On-Site Assessment is scheduled for October 12th and 13th. During this time, trained assessors from peer agencies across the state will arrive to conduct inspections, file review, and audits of the police department. These representatives of the Illinois Chiefs of Police Association will be examining the department to ensure the Algonquin Police Department is worthy of the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program’s (ILEAP) professional status.

The Algonquin Police Department was first awarded this honor in 2013. This assessment serves as a re-accreditation of the Tier 2 Status, which includes 181 professional standards in the areas of Administration, Operations, Personnel, and Training.

Chief Dennis Walker and the accreditation team invite the public to voice their opinions, experiences, and other information with the accreditation team. On October 13th from 12pm to 1pm, citizens may call in to 847-658-4531 to speak privately with the representatives from ILEAP. The assessment team wants to hear your experiences with the Algonquin Police Department and whether you, the citizens, feel your police department should be accredited.

Once the on-site visit is completed, the assessment team confers, develops an on-site report, and meets at the Illinois Chiefs of Police Association’s ILEAP Council meeting to discuss their findings. The Council votes to determine if our agency has met the professional standards that form the esteemed title of accreditation.

When you call in, tell the Records Clerk that you would like to speak with the On-site team. They will transfer you to the assessment team who will be working in a private area. Feel confident that your opinions and issues will be heard by the on-site team and forwarded to the Chief.
