Allegany Fire Department Pictures of emergency scenes and trainings Willard Hook & Ladder Company formed the Allegany Fire Department on February 19, 1890. Livingston Community Center.

The Company volunteered for 13 years before a fire destroyed the station on February 20, 1903. By March of 1909, volunteers, using hand drawn-equipment organized Allegany Hose Company #1. The Company was housed on West Main Street at the corner of North Fifth Street (currently the Catalano Plumbing Bldg.), where it remained until 1959. In 1959, the Engine Company moved to its newly built Fire Hall on North First Street, where it still remains today. In 1971, the Engine Company began building a Club House at 45 Maple Avenue which was damaged during the flood of 1972. On June 13, 1978, the Company purchased the property at 45 North First Street. This property included a residence that is currently rented to St. Bonaventure University students. The house has property behind it which is the site of the Fireman's Memorial Park. The park is open to the community. In 1989, the Fireman's Community Center was built. It was designed to be used as a reception hall for the local community and for the firemen's new clubhouse. In 1996, the Fire Department renamed the Community Center the Robert H. Robert H. Livingston was the Fire Department's oldest active firefighter at the time. Livingston was also instrumental in the design and construction of the building and was the caretaker for many years. (photo of Mr. Livingston on right) The Allegany Engine Company Rescue Squad was also created. In 1990, the Town of Allegany formed a Fire District governed by a Board of Fire Commissioners. The Fire Commissioners are elected into office and handle all legal, financial and public affairs of the Fire Department.

New Truck update pictures. Unfortunately there is an unexpected delay with the International chassis. Seems like delays are very common with fire truck manufacturers these days.

TAKE A WALK THROUGH YOUR BAYS.

Really look at the gear sitting on the racks.

You’ll notice something pretty damn quick.

About 80% of it looks brand new. Clean. Shiny. Barely touched. Sitting there collecting a little dust.

Then there’s the other 20%.

The gear that looks like it’s been through hell and back.

Charred. Torn. Stained. Beat to s**t.

THOSE ARE YOUR WORKERS.

The ones putting in the reps.
The ones heading toward the fire instead of away from it.
The ones crawling through the smoke, making the search, stretching the line, opening up the building and getting the job done without needing someone standing behind them telling them every move to make.

I want the firefighters you have to HOLD BACK AT THE DOOR.

Not the ones you have to convince to walk through it.

Give me the firefighter who sees the assignment and goes to work.

Not the one showing up for the T-shirt, the title, the recognition, or to be liked by everybody.

The real workers might p**s some people off.

They might be loud.
They might be stubborn.
They might not give a s**t about popularity contests.

But when you're making an interior search, riding the nozzle, opening up, or going to work in a bad building, those are the people you want beside you.

Because they know the job.

They've put in the reps.

They've earned their confidence.

And you don't have to stand there holding their hand.

That's what should scare every fire department.

Not dirty gear.

Not somebody who's been working hard enough to wear their equipment out.

What should scare you is how much perfectly clean gear is sitting on the racks because the person wearing it hasn't done enough work to get it dirty.

Everyone has a job.

But the truth is…

WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH WORKERS.

And on the fireground, you can tell the difference.
Your gear usually tells the story before you ever open your mouth.
